Remote and hybrid positions are available with applicants based in designated states. Campus work at Loyola University Maryland Main Campus is also available.

Position Duties

The purpose of this position is to perform entry‑level duties installing, servicing, and repairing a variety of residential and commercial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC) equipment.

Essential Functions
  • Assist in the installation, operation, service, and repair of light commercial heat pump/air conditioning systems and other HVAC equipment such as refrigerators, fume hoods, window units, exhaust ventilators, coolers, deep freezers, and unit ventilators.
  • Assist in the operation, service, and repair of pneumatic, electric, or electronic control systems on HVAC systems.
  • Regulate and monitor air handling equipment, compressors, cooling tower fans, and other related support equipment as prescribed by operating procedures.
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks on a variety of HVAC equipment including replacing filters, motors, and control devices.
  • Perform service tasks such as adding refrigerant, lubricating, adjusting and replacing compressors and expansion devices, repairing pumps, cleaning cooling towers and repacking valve glands and pump seals.
  • Install and reinstall wiring and controls to connect components and controls to electrical power sources at low line voltage.
  • Service and repair traps, flash tanks, piping, control valves, condensate pumps, and meters on steam systems.
  • Perform mechanical joining of piping using industry methods such as soldering, brazing, and gas welding.
  • Insulate piping and mechanical equipment such as heat exchangers and associated subsystems.
  • Perform insulation repairs to air duct systems.
  • Operate and maintain tools, power tools, and equipment of the trade or area where assigned.
  • Cleans work area upon completion of the assignment.
  • Assist with snow/ice removal campus‑wide as required and directed.
Other Duties

Perform any other duties and responsibilities assigned or directed by the supervisor, including attendance of and participation in required training for the role.

Physical/Environmental Demands

This role requires frequent walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined spaces, and lifting or carrying 20–50 pounds regularly and occasionally 100 pounds or more. Work may involve exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes, cold, heat, noise, vibrations, dampness, dangerous equipment, and machinery, and may be performed in adverse weather conditions. Protective clothing or gear such as earplugs, hard hats, masks, gloves, insulated clothing, boots, and coats is usually required.

  • Vocational or technical training in HVAC or related field.

  • 1–3 years of related experience required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of related experience.
Required Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles of air conditioning and refrigeration; installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC equipment and systems.
  • Knowledge of refrigerant types, environmental impact, and gas reclamation procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations related to the refrigeration trade, National Electric Code, and basic mathematics (area, volume, weights, fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions).
  • Knowledge of plumbing, steam‑fitting, and related electrical trades as they pertain to HVAC systems.
  • Skill in the installation, repair, and maintenance of commercial or industrial HVAC equipment and systems.
  • Proficiency in using and maintaining tools and equipment of the trade, including welding, brazing, soldering.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, drawings, and specifications.
  • Ability to read and explain manufacturer recommendations regarding scheduled and preventive maintenance, servicing, and operation.
