Position OverviewUnder general supervision installs, services and repairs various components of commercial and industrial HVAC systems, including heat pumps and centralized air conditioning units up to 250 tons with multiple zone applications. Troubleshoots and maintains HVAC, piping, electrical, and control systems while ensuring an understanding of building mechanical operations for user comfort and efficiency. Manages work activities utilizing the Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS) AiM, completes required training programs, and contributes to the efficient operation of building systems.
Responsibilities- Operate, install, maintain, service, and diagnose hydronic systems including piping system, pumps, valves, flow controls devices, cooling towers, fluid tube bundles, and coils.
- Operate, install, maintain, service, and diagnose air moving and control equipment including ducts, blowers, fans, dampers, VAV, VVT, and condensate control devices.
- Operate, install, maintain, service, and diagnose refrigerant using HVAC systems including ductless split, ducted split, water source package, RTU, CRAC, chillers, and specialty refrigeration systems.
- Operate, install, maintain, service, and diagnose electrical components and control systems supporting HVAC and hydronic equipment including motors, actuators, transformers, contractors, relays, timers.
- Operate computers systems relating to energy management, time tracking, work recording and email.
- Operate, install, maintain, service and diagnose VFD applied to HVAC and pumping systems.
- Operate, install, maintain, service, and diagnose humidification and dehumidification systems utilizing steam and electrical power for steam generation.
- Operate, install, maintain, service and diagnose gas fired burners serving boilers and heat exchangers.
- Provides guidance and training in the HVAC trade.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma, CFC certification, valid non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license. Six years progressively responsible experience in any combination of air conditioning, refrigeration, temperature control, steam distribution, or heating trades.
Preferred QualificationsCompletion of trade school or apprenticeship program, HVAC journeyman license.

Pay Range: $31.21 per hour to $36.05 per hour based on the University System of Maryland (USM) Pay Program. Facility Management provides free uniforms and shoes for skilled trades positions. Tools are provided for use on the job as well as a UMBC owned vehicle to travel to worksites on campus. UMBC also assists with keeping trades licenses current and obtaining needed training.
Opportunities for shift differential, on-call, and overtime pay may be available. Salary will be based on a variety of factors; most offers will be close to the minimum part of the range.
