Position Overview

UMBC is seeking a Stationary Engineer
- High Temperature/Pressure to perform technical maintenance work as a lead operating engineer on a shift in a power plant with central station refrigeration or air conditioning equipment. Operates and maintains high-temperature hot water boilers (50+ million BTU) and a 2,000-ton chiller.

This is an essential position assigned to the night shift, with standard hours of 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., Monday
- Friday.

UMBC offers competitive compensation. This role starts at $76,000 and has 14 days of vacation as well as winter break, spring break, and personal days for regular full time roles. Tuition remission is also available.

Responsibilities
  • Functions as operating engineer with responsibility for safe, constant and efficient operation of a Central Plant Boiler. Provides guidance and training to first grade stationary engineers on assigned shift.
  • Coordinates inspection, repair and maintenance activities for both emergency and non-emergency conditions. Responds to abnormal situations such as switching pumps and boilers. Functions as liaison with contractors.
  • Operates and maintains central station type reciprocating, centrifugal or absorption air conditioning and refrigeration equipment with single compressor and chiller units in excess of 500 tons.
  • Records data such as temperature, pressure, hours of operation, fuel consumed, water levels, voltage load and generator balance.
  • Records operation and maintenance actions taken during shift and prepares reports. Monitors all safety control equipment and meters. Adjusts automatic and manual controls to assure equipment operation within recommended ranges and defined standards.
  • Receives requests for operation and maintenance response to urgent matters on campus during off‑hours; records activity; manages key control system.
  • Operates and maintains tools and equipment of the trade. Cleans work area upon completion of project.
  • Performs water tests and modifies water supply as necessary with chemical solutions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Applicants seeking a part‑time position (less than 40 hours per week) will be considered.

Required

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Five years in the operation of a boiler room facility, three years of which involved boilers over 500 horsepower and chillers in excess of 500 tons
  • Licensure as a First Grade Stationary Engineer in the State of Maryland
  • Class C Driver’s License valid in the State of Maryland
Preferred Qualifications

Experience with high-pressure systems and campus central plant operations is strongly preferred. Closing Date:

Salary

Pay Range 13 (starts at $76,000 (prorated for part‑time), commensurate with qualifications and experience) based on the University System of Maryland Pay Program.
