The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities comprised of four bridges, two tunnels, and two turnpikes across the State of Maryland. Nature of Work: This is the advanced level of repair and maintenance work on motor vehicles, diesel-powered equipment and/or construction/maintenance equipment. Employees are responsible for performing routine repair work, standard preventive maintenance services, and assisting with major automotive repairs. The duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performing standard preventive maintenance services such as oil changes, lubricating chassis joints, and overall vehicle inspection as part of routine maintenance;
- Conducting electronic engine analyses and various specialized tests, such as cylinder compression, computer malfunctions, fuel pump manifold vacuum etc.;
- Checking repairs or replacing various standard components and subassemblies such as ball joints, brake lining, and other integral parts on the vehicle;
- Conducting commercial vehicle inspections of vehicles over 26,000 lbs.;
- Diagnosing and repairing emission failures; and
- Road testing all equipment repaired before releasing it from the shop.
Employees in this classification are considered essential employees and are subject to being on call 24 hours a day, as may be required to maintain the continuous operation of a facility. Employees must provide the agency with a telephone number where they can be reached. In the event of hazardous weather or highway conditions, employees will be called to duty during off-hours to maintain and repair equipment.
This is maintenance work requiring physical exertion that is performed either outdoors under all weather conditions or inside a building. On some assignments, employees may be required to move objects weighing over 50 pounds.
Employees in this classification receive supervision from a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Supervisor I or other designated official. The current vacancies are located in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Cecil/Harford Counties. The established list from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies at other MDTA facilities.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Four years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy-duty construction equipment. Two years of the required experience must include servicing and repairing heavy duty construction equipment and diesel engines.

1. Employees are assigned duties that require the operation of motor vehicles. Employees must possess and maintain a Class C motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
2. Employees are required to possess and maintain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the State of Maryland during the probationary period, depending on the type of equipment operated.
3. Employees in this class may be required to obtain Special Commercial Driver's License Endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles depending on the type of equipment operated.
4. Employees must have satisfied the second level of the employing administration's certification program prior to application.
