The Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA) is the owner & operator of both BWI Thurgood Marshall and Martin State Airports, serving over 27 million passengers annually.

The MAA is currently accepting applications for the position of Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician III within the Office of Fleet Maintenance at BWI Marshall Airport (BWI Marshall Airport).

Responsibilities
  • Performing preventive maintenance inspections.
  • Inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing major malfunctions on motor vehicles and motor equipment.
  • Performing standard preventive maintenance services such as changing oil, fueling, cleaning, or greasing parts.
  • Assisting in snow removal procedures on Airport Runways and taxiways.
  • Road‑testing vehicles and equipment to ensure safety and reliability.

This position is an emergency essential position and requires availability to work during weather, operational, and/or disaster emergencies. It is a 24‑hour facility role and requires work shifts as required by MAA operational needs.

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years of experience servicing, maintaining, and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy‑duty construction equipment. Two of those years must include servicing and repairing heavy duty construction equipment and diesel engines.

  • Applicants may substitute additional documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education.
  • Completion of an accredited training program for Heavy Equipment or Diesel Repair may be substituted for one and one‑half years of the general experience. The accrediting body must be listed in the U.S. Department of Education's Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.
  • U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as defined under the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education and experience.
  • Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for two years of the required education. The experience used to qualify for ASE testing is considered integral to this substitution and cannot also be used separately to meet Education or Experience Minimum Qualifications.
  • Certification as a Master Technician in one or more subject areas by ASE can be substituted for the required education.
  • Employees are assigned duties that require the operation of motor vehicles and must possess and maintain a Class C motor vehicle operator’s license valid in Maryland.
  • Employees must possess and maintain a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) valid in Maryland during the probationary period, depending on equipment type.
  • Employees may be required to obtain Special Commercial Driver’s License endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles depending on equipment type.
  • Employees must have satisfied the second level of the administering administration’s certification program prior to application.
  • Employees wishing to transfer or be promoted must pass the administration’s specific certification for Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician III.
  • Employees new to MAA must obtain an MAA Airfield Operators Permit in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulation , Control of Vehicular Traffic on the Air Operations Area prior to permanent appointment.
  • Employees may be required to obtain certification in Air Conditioning Recycling and Recovery during probationary period.
  • Employees required to function as Commercial Vehicle Inspectors may need to obtain and maintain a Commercial Vehicle Inspector’s license.
