Building Maintenance Mechanic
The Building Maintenance Mechanic performs inspections, preventive maintenance, and repair work on building systems and components in a large commercial and hospital facility. Working under general supervision, this role applies a broad range of skills across electrical, carpentry, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and general building maintenance to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all assigned areas.
Responsibilities:
- Inspect, maintain, and repair building systems and components, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and general facility infrastructure.
- Perform preventive maintenance tasks on equipment and systems in accordance with trade, industry, and engineered standards.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment and system issues, and complete timely repairs to restore proper operation.
- Use a variety of tools and equipment safely and correctly in accordance with OSHA and industry safety standards.
- Apply knowledge of basic electrical, carpentry, mechanical, and plumbing techniques, procedures, and building codes in daily work.
- Identify, report, and correct hazards by following warning labels, signage, lights, and other warning devices.
- Complete maintenance and repair tasks within reasonable time frames, as measured against trade and industry benchmarks.
- Communicate effectively in written and verbal English with staff and colleagues to coordinate work and document activities.
- Perform painting, general building upkeep, and other facility maintenance tasks as needed.
- Work in shops, mechanical rooms, and throughout the facility, including confined spaces, elevated locations, and outdoor areas.
- Load, unload, and move tools, equipment, and materials, including pushing and pulling loaded hand trucks as required.
- Support continuous operation of the facility by working assigned shifts and responding to maintenance needs in designated zones.
Essential
Skills:
- At least 5 years of experience in building maintenance, preferably in commercial or institutional environments.
- Proficiency in facility maintenance and general building maintenance, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and carpentry tasks.
- Hands-on experience with HVAC systems, including troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance.
- Working knowledge of basic electrical, carpentry, mechanical, and plumbing techniques, procedures, and building codes.
- Knowledge of safety rules, procedures, and practices, including proper use of safety equipment as defined by OSHA and industry standards.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment associated with building and mechanical work.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve facility and equipment issues effectively.
- Proficient written and verbal English communication skills at a high school graduate level to interact with staff and document work.
- Ability to recognize and avoid hazards by following warning labels, signage, lights, and other warning devices.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods, work in confined spaces and awkward positions, and work at heights up to 30 feet using ladders, lifts, and equipment.
- Ability to load, unload, transport, and position tools, equipment, and materials, and push or pull loaded hand trucks weighing up to 75 pounds.

Qualifications:
- Training in multiple trades programs from a vocational or technical school, college, or apprenticeship sponsor organization.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience working in large commercial buildings or hospital facilities.
- Familiarity with CFC and EPA-related practices for HVAC and refrigeration systems.
- Experience with painting and general facility upkeep.
- Comfort working in environments with dust, heat, cold, noise, and fumes.
- Ability to work outdoors with exposure to extreme temperatures and varying weather conditions.
- Strong information management and problem-solving skills related to maintenance operations.

Work Environment:
This role is based in a large hospital shop and mechanical environment, supporting a sizable facility with extensive building systems. You will work in shops, mechanical rooms, and throughout the campus, accumulating significant walking and movement during each shift. The environment includes exposure to dust, heat, cold, noise, and fumes, and some work is performed outdoors in extreme temperatures and varying weather conditions.
