a superintendent of utilities maintenance and repair, through subordinate supervisors, oversees the activities of multiple crews engaged in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of either baltimore city’s water distribution, waste water collection or storm drains system. Work of this class involves directing the activities of construction and maintenance, equipment operation and office support work units. Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical superior.
Employees in this class work a five day workweek including evenings, weekends and holidays on a rotating basis, and are subject to 24-hour call-back on a rotating basis and as required for emergencies or held over until properly relieved or for emergencies. Work is performed primarily in an office, however, incumbents are required to be present at main breaks and construction sites and encounter inclement weather, extremes of heat and cold and traffic hazards.
Work usually requires minimal physical exertion; however, there may be periods of prolonged walking and/or standing and short periods of moderate exertion.
on or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:
- education: have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a ged certificate.
- experience: have five years of experience in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of a water distribution system or storm water and waste water collection system including two years of such supervisory responsibilities as disciplining, evaluating the performance of and recommending the hiring, firing and promoting of other supervisors.
- licenses, registrations, and certificates: have a valid maryland class c noncommercial driver’s license or an equivalent driver’s license and eligible to obtain a baltimore city driver’s permit. Provisional driver’s license or learner permits are not acceptable.

employees hired or promoted into this classification after march 1, 2015, will be required as a condition of employment:
- to apply within 30 days to obtain a temporary state of maryland wastewater collection class c2 or water distribution class d1 certifications issued by the state of maryland board of waterworks and waste systems operators.
- proof of temporary licenses must be submitted to the supervisor and human resources within six months of hire.
- to obtain and maintain permanent state of maryland wastewater collection class c2 or water distribution class d1 certifications issued by the state of maryland board of waterworks and waste systems operators within three years from the date or hire/promotion.
- failure to obtain or maintain certifications may result in demotion or termination of employment.
- note: effective march 1, 2015, employees hired into this classification prior to march 1, 2015, must obtain and maintain temporary or permanent wastewater collection class c2 or water distribution class d1 certifications issued by the state of maryland board of waterworks and waste systems operators as…
