Job Overview
Yahoo Mail Backend Team develops and maintains high-performing systems that provide API (Web Services, IMAP, & POP), Metadata and Elastic Storage for electronic mail and its auxiliary functions. The system handles billions of requests a day and supports a variety of clients across mobile, desktop, and web. The team works on problems from web services to operating system and networking layers.
ResponsibilitiesYou will be coding in Java and/or C++ on Unix platform to help build the next generation backend for Yahoo Mail. You will use AI tools to augment development productivity in a fast‑paced backend environment. This role is in the Communications organization that connects the world through Mail, Messenger, Groups, Calendar, Contacts, and Notepad. On this team, you have an opportunity to impact the productivity and connected lives of approximately 300 million users every month.
Additional responsibilities include working with Engineers, Product Managers, and Designers to deliver innovative experiences that transform how users connect with each other.

Minimum Qualifications- BS in Computer Science (or equivalent experience) with minimum of 4 years experience
- Specialized in backend development with Java, C++, or similar languages
- Familiarity with AI‑assisted development tools (e.g., Git Hub Copilot, Claude) to accelerate coding and debugging workflows
- Solid understanding of CS fundamentals (algorithms, data structures, object‑oriented programming)
- Understanding of search algorithms, and familiarity with relational and No
SQL databases - Enjoys challenging engineering problems and can solve complex issues
- Flexible and able to work with a diverse team that includes engineers, marketing, product, and designers
- Familiar with HTTP and TCP/IP protocols
- Linux/Unix knowledge necessary
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
- Experience developing mail applications
- Knowledge of large-scale distributed systems
- Experience with continuous integration (CI) frameworks
- Familiarity with SCRUM or similar agile methodology
- GCP Cloud experience highly preferred
We offer flexible hybrid work options. While most roles do not require regular office attendance, occasionally in‑person events or team sessions may be requested. The compensation range for this position is $111,000 – $231,250 per year, varying based on location, skills, and experience. The package may also include incentive compensation such as discretionary annual bonus or commissions. Comprehensive benefits include healthcare, 401(k), backup childcare, education stipends, and more.
