The Asst Aquatics Director will assist with the organization and supervision of all of the aquatic programs for McDonogh School. He/She supports the development of a teaching and coaching staff specific for swim instruction and competitive aquatic programs. The position includes faculty supervision specific to aquatics, curriculum development, and scheduling certified swim instructors and coaches to support swim instruction and MS/US Athletics.

The position also includes directly coaching student‑athletes and facility management. The Asst Aquatics Director also oversees the care and operation of the facility (an indoor Olympic 50m pool, offices, storage, and locker rooms) which includes managing the sanitation/filtration system, water testing and temperature control as outlined by the State of Maryland Department of Health. This role also serves as the Summer Camp Aquatic Director for the summer programs of McDonogh School.

Compensation for this position will generally be offered in the range of $55,000 – $70,000. Individual offers will be specific, and based on education, experience, and benchmarking parameters.

Essential Functions
  • Monitor and maintain proper chemical levels according to standards that are set by the Maryland Department of Health, and maintain daily required documentation of chemical readings for pool water
  • Ensure proper inventory of required chemicals on site
  • Proper care of the pool filtration system, including but not limited to backwashing the filter system and vacuuming the pool bottom as needed
  • Physical Education Instruction:
    Teach Pre‑First‑6th grades as assigned by the PE Dept Chair
  • Prepare monthly student reports outlining students’ swimming skills, progression, student goals, and goals of the swim program at McDonogh School
  • Communicate with classroom teachers and parents on a regular basis regarding students who are having difficulty and/or are excessively unprepared for class
  • Support the supervision of the boys’ and girls’ locker rooms
  • Serve as Head Coach of the MS Water Polo and MS Swim Teams and Assistant Coach for the US Water Polo and Swim Teams
  • Coordinate and submit student billing for clothing and equipment for members of school water polo and swim teams
  • Oversee, coordinate, and work with the Summer Programs Department for aquatic center use
  • Schedule and staff any outside rental groups, and collect all necessary documentation
  • Send monthly rental invoices to Stevenson University for college team practices and meets
  • Staff and oversee school lifeguards for Boarder or Faculty and Staff swim nights
  • Monthly check of first‑aid kits, and replace/restock as needed
  • Keep the aquatic center deck clean and orderly
  • Submit maintenance and work orders as needed for the facility
Recommended Employment Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from a 4‑year college or university; or 3–5 years of experience relevant to the position; or equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or training. First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Maryland Certified Pool Operator License. Red Cross Lifeguarding certification. USA Swimming registered Coach.
