Position Overview
The City of Baltimore is hiring a Section Chief of Traffic. This is a non‑civil service position with an annual salary range of $99,053.00 to $.
Summary of PositionThe Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). responsible for planning, designing, building and maintaining 2,000 miles of roadways, 7 miles of interstate highways, 298 bridges and culverts, 3,600 miles of sidewalks, and other transportation infrastructure. The Section Chief of Traffic will lead the Traffic Division, ensuring the department’s activities support the Mayor’s Complete Streets priority and equitable investment across all neighborhoods.
Essential Functions- Authorize installation of traffic control devices, including signals, signs and pavement markings.
- Operate and maintain the city’s 1,350 traffic signals.
- Conduct traffic studies and coordinate with other departments on traffic analysis, mitigation and construction projects.
- Work with multidisciplinary planning and design teams on roadway improvement, ITS, transportation safety, bicycle and pedestrian projects, and other related initiatives.
- Recruit, hire staff and oversee consultant resources.
- Manage the agency’s Transportation Safety Improvement Program and transportation management center.
- Conduct traffic policy research and analysis on a range of topics.
- Education:
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university. - Experience:
Five (5) years of experience managing engineering projects as a licensed professional engineer, certification as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer, and a minimum of three years directly supervising senior engineers, junior engineers and engineering technicians. - Equivalency:
An equivalent combination of experience and/or education may qualify; non‑supervisory experience or education cannot replace the required supervisory experience.
- Valid Maryland Class C non‑commercial driver’s license, or an equivalent out‑of‑state license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management.
- Eligibility to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.
