Vehicle Service and Recovery Technician
The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates and maintains eight major toll facilities across Maryland. The Vehicle Service and Recovery Technician provides efficient traffic operations along the State Highway System. This position manages traffic control at incident scenes and operates motorist information systems in support of the SOC and TOCs.
- Operate medium‑duty tow trucks to remove disabled and accident vehicles from tunnels, bridges, and roadways.
- Assist in cleaning up hazardous material spills.
- Extinguish basic stage fires using fire extinguishers.
- Operate specialized heavy‑duty tow trucks and underrun vehicles to remove heavy duty vehicles from tunnels, bridges, and roadways.
- Perform daily cleaning duties, vehicle inspections, and maintenance.
- Complete vehicle recovery related documentation accurately and neatly.
- Interact with customers using MDTA facilities in a professional manner.
- Perform mechanical repairs on disabled and accidental related vehicles.
This is field work requiring physical exertion and is performed outdoors on highways and adjacent areas, under all weather conditions. Employees work rotating shifts, including evenings, nights, and weekends. In the event of emergency highway conditions employees may be called back during scheduled off hours. New hires serve an initial 12‑month probationary period.
Employees report to the Regional Manager of the Vehicle Recovery Unit or other designated official. The current vacancies are located in Baltimore and Cecil counties. The resulting eligible list may be used to fill future vacancies within MDTA facilities.

MDTA employees in this classification receive Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training, with all expenses covered. Employees who already hold a Class A “No Restrictions” CDL will receive a higher starting rate of pay.
Minimum Qualifications- High school graduation or high school equivalency certificate.
- One year of experience performing emergency highway operations work, including relocating disabled vehicles, making minor repairs to disabled vehicles, or coordinating with emergency response departments.
- Applicants may substitute equivalent U.S. Armed Forces military service experience for civilian experience cited above.
