Position Overview

State Highway Administration’s Office of Transportation Mobility and Operations (CHART) is recruiting for an Emergency Response Technician (Grade 12) in the State of Maryland. This entry‑level position is open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications below.

Nature of Work / Responsibilities
  • Perform incident management and traffic congestion management duties.
  • Provide guidance and advice to Emergency Traffic Patrol operators.
  • Conduct traffic control at incident scenes, assist disabled motorists, and report real‑time traffic information to the Statewide Operations Center (SOC) and Traffic Operations Centers (TOC).
  • Operate special towing equipment to recover disabled vehicles and other objects obstructing traffic on SHA roadways and facilities.
  • Resume regular traffic flow during incidents under supervision.
  • Maintain regular patrol routes and respond to routine incidents during patrols.
  • Communicate with SOC and TOC personnel through in‑vehicle computer systems and/or radio transmissions.
Qualifications
  • High school graduation or a high school equivalency certificate.
  • At least one year of experience performing emergency highway operations, including relocating disabled vehicles, making minor repairs, and coordinating with emergency response departments.
  • Military service experience may substitute for civilian experience.
  • Valid driver’s license in the state of Maryland. During the probationary period, employees must obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and a US DOT Medical Card, as required.
  • Certification as a light‑duty tow truck operator upon hire, during the probationary period.
