About Cambrian Bioworks
Cambrian Bioworks is an Indian life sciences company that develops and manufactures laboratory automation instruments and diagnostic products for clinical and research applications. Our instruments are deployed across hospitals, genomics labs, and diagnostic institutions across India and internationally. We are ISO 13485 certified with CE-IVDR and CDSCO approvals and are scaling our installed base rapidly across the country.
Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior Field Service Engineer to own installation, commissioning, preventive maintenance, and breakdown repair of our laboratory automation instruments across India. This is a fully independent, pan-India field role based out of Bengaluru. You will be the primary service resource on the ground — expected to diagnose and resolve issues without escalation in most cases, and to deliver a high-quality installation experience that sets customers up for long-term success.
You will work closely with our internal applications and R&D teams for technical escalations, and coordinate with the sales team on installation timelines and customer readiness. Travel is a core part of this role — expect to be in the field 60–70% of the time.
What You Will Be Measured On
- First-time fix rate on field breakdown calls
- Installation turnaround time — from site readiness to successful handover
- Customer satisfaction post-installation and post-service visits
- Preventive maintenance schedule adherence across the installed base
- Escalation rate — senior engineers escalate rarely
What You Will Do
Installation & Commissioning
- Execute end-to-end installation and commissioning of laboratory automation instruments at customer sites across India
- Validate instrument performance post-installation against defined acceptance criteria
- Conduct site readiness assessments prior to installation — power, space, network, consumables
- Train lab staff on basic instrument operation, routine maintenance, and error handling at the point of installation
- Produce accurate installation reports and hand over documentation to the customer
Field Service & Breakdown Repair
- Respond to field breakdown calls and resolve hardware, electronics, and software issues independently
- Diagnose root cause of instrument failures — mechanical, fluidic, electronic, or firmware — and implement permanent fixes
- Manage spare parts inventory and ensure critical spares are available for rapid deployment
- Escalate to R&D only for issues that require engineering-level intervention — document findings clearly before escalation
- Maintain a field service log for every visit with fault description, actions taken, parts replaced, and resolution status
Preventive Maintenance
- Execute scheduled preventive maintenance visits across the installed base as per service contracts
- Proactively identify wear parts and components approaching end of life and replace before failure
- Maintain and update the PM schedule in coordination with the service and sales teams
Technical Support & Coordination
- Provide remote troubleshooting support to customers and sales team for L1 issues before dispatching a field visit
- Coordinate with the applications team for instrument performance issues that overlap with protocol or reagent factors
- Feed field observations back to R&D — recurring failure modes, design improvement opportunities, and customer pain points
What We're Looking For
Must Have
- 6–10 years of field service experience on laboratory automation instruments — liquid handlers, PCR systems, or similar capital equipment
- Strong electronics troubleshooting ability — circuit board level diagnosis, sensor calibration, motor and actuator repair
- Hands-on experience with fluidic systems — pumps, valves, tubing, and liquid handling mechanics
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and firmware error logs
- Fully independent — diagnoses and resolves issues on-site without hand-holding from HQ
- Comfortable with 60–70% pan-India travel including short-notice field deployments
- Strong written and verbal communication in English — service reports must be clear and professional
Preferred Background
- Prior service experience on instruments from Beckman Coulter, Tecan, Hamilton, Thermo Fisher, or equivalent liquid handling platforms
- Exposure to NGS laboratory environments or molecular diagnostics instrument servicing
- Experience managing a spare parts inventory and planning preventive maintenance schedules
- Diploma or degree in Electronics, Instrumentation, Mechatronics, or Biomedical Engineering
Compensation
Competitive fixed compensation benchmarked to senior field service talent in the life sciences instrumentation segment. All field travel, accommodation, and out-of-pocket expenses fully reimbursed per company policy. Tools, test equipment, and spare parts inventory provided.
