Controller

Bangor Housing Authority, one of the largest housing authorities in Maine, is seeking a Controller to join their team and be responsible for maintaining consistency and efficiency in recording day‑to‑day financial transactions including cash management, accounts payable and receivable, management of the bookkeeper and assisting with budget creation. The position reports to the CFO and interacts heavily with the Property Management, Compliance, and Development departments.

This role offers a hybrid flexible work arrangement, requiring the employee to work onsite in Bangor, Maine two days per week.

Requirements of the Controller
  • Four‑year degree in accounting or related field required.
  • 5 years of experience in accounting, asset management, or related field preferred.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office product skills including Excel.
  • Strong financial analysis skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Detail oriented and highly organized.
  • Experience in non‑profit or affordable housing agency preferred.
  • Working knowledge of state financing agency regulations preferred.

Responsibilities of the Controller
  • Fund accounting and cost allocations for Bangor Housing Authority (BHA) and Bangor Housing Development Corporation (BHDC).
  • Accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts and disbursements for BHA and BHDC.
  • Create ACH files and transfer funds as needed.
  • Assist CFO with developing budgets.
  • Conduct monthly closing procedures.
  • Assist with preparation for reviews and audits.
  • Track Community Solar electricity credits.
  • Work with Property Manager and Maintenance to determine and book capital improvements.
  • Handle MD130 requisitions for use of reserve funds.
  • Perform special projects and participate on committees as assigned.
