Assistant Teacher, Special Education Program (Grades K–4)

We are looking for an Assistant Teacher to join our collaborative special education team serving students in kindergarten through fourth grade. Our students may have autism, ADHD, histories of trauma, or a combination of needs. They are also creative, funny, curious children with individual strengths, interests, and ways of experiencing the world. The Assistant Teacher helps create a predictable, engaging environment where each student can learn.

What you’ll do:
  • Help students understand and follow their daily routines.
  • Support students during classroom lessons, transitions, meals, play, and other school activities.
  • Reinforce instruction and skills introduced by special education teachers.
  • Work alongside and provide support to educational technicians.
  • Collaborate with clinicians, BCBAs, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and other members of the student support team.
  • Use individualized strategies, visual supports, positive reinforcement, and other tools identified in students’ educational and behavior plans.
  • Help students develop communication, emotional-regulation, social, academic, and independence skills.
  • Notice and build upon each child’s unique interests, strengths, and needs.
  • Respond to challenging moments with patience and respect.
  • Assist with classroom organization, preparation, documentation, and other daily needs.

Experience working with children with disabilities, behavioral needs, or trauma histories is helpful, but a willingness to learn and a strong commitment to children are equally important. Training and support will be provided. This is an opportunity to become part of a skilled, supportive team and to make a meaningful difference in children’s daily experiences at school.

  • Must obtain Safety Care certification within 30 days of hire. (agency provided)
  • Must obtain BHP certification within 12 months of hire. (agency provided)
  • Valid State of Maine driver license, reliable transportation with proof of registration and insurance, and willingness to use own transportation for work.
