Job SummaryResponsible for electric system protection technology platforms in both Maine (Central Maine Power and Maine Electric Power Company) and New York (NYSEG and RG&E). The role includes establishing standards, providing training, and ensuring communication across the delivery systems (approximately 2,600 miles of transmission lines and 317 substations in Maine; 5,600 miles and 621 substations in New York) and developing protection engineering studies to evaluate equipment, system effectiveness, and protection system operations.
Key Responsibilities- Guide engineering design, estimating, and analysis of the electric transmission and substation protection systems in support of capital construction budget and performance enhancement.
- Develop and coordinate the system protection platform for AVANGRID, including integration, settings, networking, design specifications, and commissioning plans.
- Oversee the evaluation and demonstration of new technology for safety, cost, and efficiency, implementing enhancements to power system performance.
- Lead engineering studies to evaluate equipment and protection system performance and analyze operational issues to support system reliability and operational efficiency.
- Provide expertise and guide the analysis of transmission fault event operations, ensuring protection schemes operate as intended and producing concise fault analysis reports.
- Represent the company on regional and national committees.
- Lead and guide the technical development of the Protection Engineering group.
- Act as a primary protection engineering expert within the USA organization, providing high‑level consultations on complex problems and emerging issues.
- Collaborate across operating companies, global affiliates, and various departments both within and outside the organization.
- Provide technical leadership in complex projects, mentor staff, and support technical skill development.
Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology. Master’s Degree preferred. Professional engineering license preferred.
Required Qualifications- Minimum 7+ years of technical experience in protection engineering or related field.
- Expert knowledge of engineering design, national and international standards, and compliance requirements for power system protection.
- Strong technical, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to collaborate across departments and influence engineering decisions.
- Independent decision‑making capability and strong communication skills.
- Experience in performing complex protection coordination analysis.
- Project management skills and awareness of commercial implications.
- Safety leadership and adherence to safety regulations.
- Expertise in all aspects of power engineering theory, application, standards, design, test, commissioning, and analysis.
- Strong diagnostic and problem‑solving skills for complex technical challenges.
- Effective leadership skills to drive change and adoption of new technologies across operating companies and affiliates.
