Position: Call Company Firefighter

Job Overview

The Town of Scarborough Fire Department is seeking applicants for the Call Company. This is skilled firefighting and emergency medical work consisting of combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires. Duties include responding to a wide range of fire suppression and medical emergencies in a community encompassing 54 square miles with a year‑round population of approximately 20,000, and a population that is significantly higher in the summer months.

The department's annual call volume is approximately 4,000 calls for service per year. Work involves training for and participating in duties of protecting life and property through performing firefighting and rescue activities. Work is generally performed as a member of a team. Employees in this class participate in the performance of potentially hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may require strenuous exertion.

Although firefighting and rescue work are the most difficult areas of the position, a significant portion of time is spent training and studying methods and techniques in routine station maintenance, equipment maintenance, and in varied department duties. Specific orders and assignments are given by a superior officer, both in fighting fires and at the fire station. Work performance requires initiative and a thorough understanding of firefighting methods as learned on the job and in training.
