The City of Bangor Fire Department is the second largest professional fire department in the State of Maine, protecting a city of 31,000 that is rich in history and is the commercial and social center of Northern, Central, and Eastern Maine.

Bangor Fire Department provides fire protection and emergency medical services and also offers Heavy Rescue, marine response (2 boats), opportunities to serve on the Police Department’s Special Response Team, and EMS support to large events at the Maine Savings Amphitheater and the Cross Insurance Center.

Bangor firefighters work an attractive schedule of 1 day on, 1 day off, 1 day on, 5 days off with NO FORCED OVERTIME or residency requirement.

Lateral Transfers:

BFD welcomes applicants with career department experience and qualifications to apply. Lateral transfer for pay and vacation accrual up to 6 years or step G is possible as outlined in the current Local 772 collective bargaining agreement. In addition, educational incentives of $2,500 for EMTA and $5,000 for EMTP are available for applicants who already possess these certifications.

Bangor firefighters work an attractive two (2) 24‑hour shifts a week and have a highly competitive wage package. Starting salary is $58,334.64–$72,115.68 plus educational incentives ($2,500 for EMT-A, $5,000 for EMT-P). Personnel assigned to the ambulance will receive an additional $2.00 an hour. Retirement options include Maine Public Employees Retirement System plan 3C (2/3 of average final compensation after 25 years with no age minimum) or an ICMA‑RC 401(a).

Lateral transfer pay and vacation accumulation are available for candidates with current career Fire/EMS service up to 6 years of experience.

Requirements:

• Possession and maintenance of a valid driver’s license and high school diploma or equivalent.
• Possession of a Maine or National Registry EMT License prior to the start date.
• All applicants will be required to become an EMT‑Paramedic; tuition and text will be paid by BFD.
• Applicants will undergo an extensive evaluation including written fire exam and a Bangor Fire Department physical ability test. Applicants who present a valid (within last 6 months) IAFF/IAFC Candidate Physical Ability Test card will be excused from the physical ability test.
• Successful applicants must pass a background check and psychological evaluation.
• Applicants with FFI and FFII certification are desired but not required. Training will be provided through a new‑hire training academy and FFII certification will be provided within 1 year of hire.
