American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Pediatric Psych position at an acute inpatient behavioral health facility in Bangor, ME, requiring at least 1 year of behavioral health nursing experience and a ME or compact RN license.

Job Details

• Free-standing acute inpatient psychiatric facility with a contracted ER located 5 minutes away,

• Pediatric psychiatric unit serving patients ages 5-18, with floating required to the adult psychiatric unit (ages 18+/geriatric),

• Pediatric diagnoses include Eating Disorders, Depression, Suicidal Ideation, Anxiety, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Gender Dysphoria,

• Adult diagnoses include Schizophrenia, MDD, Bipolar Disorder, Eating Disorders, Suicidal Ideation, Anxiety, and occasional Substance Use Disorder/CIWA patients (medically cleared),

• All patients are admitted from an ED and are medically cleared; lines, drains, and tubes are not typical,

• Both voluntary and involuntary admissions; no forensic patients or inmates,

• Seclusion rooms are used when necessary; only physical restraints are used (no chemical restraints),

• Facility offers specialized therapies including pet therapy, group sessions, and community gardens,

• Patient ratios:
Day shift 1:5-6 RN;
Night shift 1:13 with resource/nursing support,

• Psych Tech support:
Peds Day - 6 techs, Night - 2 techs;
Adult Day - 2 techs, Night - 2 techs,

• Charting via Cerner; medications administered via Pyxis,

• Variable 48-hour work week with a mix of day ) and evening shifts,

• Every other weekend rotation (Saturday and Sunday),

• No on-call responsibilities,

• Holidays worked on a rotation basis,

Job Requirements

• Active ME state RN license or compact RN license currently in hand,

• Current BLS certification required,

• MOAB certification required (obtained on-site during orientation),

• Minimum 1 year of behavioral health nursing experience required,

• Pediatric behavioral health experience preferred; candidates without peds experience may be considered with manager approval,

• Proficiency in de-escalation techniques and physical restraint experience required,

• Experience with medication administration and clinical documentation required,

• Comfort running group sessions preferred,

• Must not have previously worked at any Northern Light Health Hospital in a permanent capacity,

• Permanent address must be 100+ miles south/southwest of the facility to be eligible,

Additional Information

• Interviews conducted via Simplifi,

• Orientation: first week (Mon-Fri) on day shift; second week on 12-hour shifts as scheduled,

• Unit support includes a Nurse Manager (days), Nurse Supervisor (evenings/weekends), House Administrator (overnight/weekends), Charge Nurse, Psych Techs, contracted Phlebotomist, NP (on-site until 1600, then on call overnight), Psychiatrist (daily rounds and on call ), and Occupational Therapist , 7 days/week),

• Security is on-site but does not respond to patient escalations; staff from all units (including Techs and Nurses) respond to patient escalations,

• Travelers living 100+ miles north of the facility may be considered on a case-by-case basis with AVP and VP of Nursing approval,

• Flu vaccination is required for employment eligibility; medical exemptions only are accepted and subject to facility review (minimum 2-week review period),

• RTO of up to 7 days is permitted; contract must be extended if shifts within a week cannot be completed,

• Scrub color: any solid color; professional appearance required,

• Free parking available on-site,

• Heavy snow conditions should be expected during winter months,

• First-time travelers are welcome to apply,

• 2 professional references from within the past year are required, with at least one from a Supervisor, Manager, or Director (Charge Nurse acceptable; no peer references),

• Full SSN, copies of all certifications, and a Driver's License are required for consideration,
