Job Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Pediatric Psychiatric Unit position in Bangor, ME, requiring at least 1 year of behavioral health nursing experience and a ME or Compact RN license.
Responsibilities- Freestanding acute inpatient psychiatric facility with a contracted ER located 5 minutes away
- Pediatric psychiatric unit serving patients ages 5–18, with floating required to the adult unit (ages 18 and older, including geriatric)
- Pediatric diagnoses include Eating Disorders, Depression, Suicidal Ideation, Anxiety, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Gender Dysphoria
- Adult diagnoses include Schizophrenia, MDD, Bipolar Disorder, Eating Disorders, Suicidal Ideation, Anxiety, and occasionally Substance Use Disorder or patients on CIWA protocol
- All patients are medically cleared prior to admission; lines, drains, and tubes are not typical
- Both voluntary and involuntary admissions; no forensic patients or inmates
- Day shift RN patient ratio is 1:5–6; night shift ratio is 1:13 with resource and nursing support
- Psych Tech support on pediatric unit: 6 during days, 2 at night; adult unit: 2 during days, 2 at night
- Variable shift schedule, primarily 7:00 AM–7:30 PM, with possible 6:00 AM–3:30 PM or 2:00 PM–11:30 PM shifts as needed
- 48 hours per week
- Every other weekend rotation (Saturday and Sunday)
- No on-call requirements
- Holiday coverage required on a rotation basis
- Charting via Cerner;
Pyxis used for medication management - Provides traditional medical and psychiatric nursing care, including medication passes, documentation, and group facilitation
- Specialized therapeutic programming includes pet therapy, group sessions, and community garden activities
- Seclusion rooms are available and used when clinically necessary
- On-unit support includes a Nurse Supervisor (evenings/weekends), Nurse Manager (days), House Administrator (overnights/weekends), Charge Nurse, Psych Techs, contracted phlebotomist, NP (on-site until 4:00 PM, on-call overnight), Psychiatrist (daily rounds and on-call midnight–6:00 AM), and Occupational Therapist (8:00 AM–4:30 PM, 7 days/week)
- Security is on-site but does not respond to patient escalations; all unit staff including Techs and Nurses respond to patient escalations
- Orientation consists of the first week (Monday–Friday) on day shift, followed by the second week on 12-hour shifts as scheduled
- Travelers may be considered for Charge Nurse responsibilities but it is not required
- Scrubs must be any solid color and professional in appearance
- Free parking is available on-site
- Heavy snow conditions should be expected during winter months
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Candidates without pediatric behavioral health experience may be considered with manager approval
- Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved; the contract must be extended if shifts within a week cannot be completed due to time off
- Active ME state RN license or Compact RN license currently in hand
- BLS certification required
- MOAB certification required (obtained on-site during orientation)
- Minimum 1 year of behavioral health nursing experience required; pediatric behavioral health experience preferred
- Experience with de-escalation techniques and physical restraints (chemical restraints are not used)
- Comfortable with medication administration and group facilitation
- Proficiency in documentation and psychiatric nursing care
- Must not have previously worked at any Northern Light Health Hospital in a permanent capacity
- Permanent address must be 100+ miles south or southwest of the facility to meet eligibility requirements
- Two professional references within the past year required, with at least one from a Supervisor, Manager, or Director (Charge Nurse acceptable; peer references not accepted)
- Full SSN, Driver's License, and copies of all certifications required for consideration
