Job Details
• Night shift schedule: 7PM-7AM, 12-hour shifts,
• 48 hours per week,
• Freestanding acute inpatient psychiatric facility with a contracted ER located 5 minutes away,
• Pediatric psychiatric unit serving patients ages 5-18; floating required to adult psychiatric unit serving patients ages 18 and older,
• Pediatric patient population includes diagnoses such as Eating Disorders, Depression, Suicidal Ideation, Anxiety, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Gender Dysphoria,
• Adult patient population most commonly includes Schizophrenia, MDD, and Bipolar Disorder; also sees Eating Disorders, Suicidal Ideation, and Anxiety,
• Patients with Substance Use Disorder or those detoxing on CIWA protocol may be seen but must be medically cleared prior to admission,
• No forensic patients or inmates; facility is locked but does not hold patients under arrest,
• Seclusion rooms are available and used when necessary; chemical restraints are not used,
• All patients are admitted from an ED and arrive medically cleared; lines, drains, and tubes are not typical,
• Night shift patient ratio: 1:13 RN with resource and nursing support,
• Day shift patient ratio: 1:5-6 RN,
• Psych Tech support on Peds: 6 during days, 2 during nights;
Adult: 2 during days, 2 during nights,
• Charting system:
Cerner;
Pyxis used for medication management,
• Every other weekend rotation (Saturday and Sunday),
• No on-call requirements,
• Holiday coverage required on a rotating basis,
• Modified self-scheduling: travelers sign up for preferred shifts, which are reviewed and adjusted by the manager/scheduler to ensure coverage; predetermined weekend rotation applies,
Job Requirements
• Active RN license - ME state license or Compact license currently in hand required,
• Current BLS certification required,
• Minimum 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing experience required,
• Pediatric behavioral health experience preferred; candidates without Peds BH experience may be considered with manager approval,
• Experience with de-escalation techniques and physical restraints required,
• Comfortable with medication passes, group facilitation, and clinical documentation,
• Permanent address must be 100+ miles south/southwest of the facility to be eligible,
• Must not have previously worked at any Northern Light Health Hospital in a permanent capacity,
• Flu vaccination required for clearance to start (medical exemptions only, subject to facility approval committee review),
• Two professional references within the last year required, with at least one from a Supervisor, Manager, or Director (Charge Nurse acceptable; peer references not accepted),
• Full SSN, Driver's License, and copies of all certifications required for consideration,
Additional Information
• MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behavior) certification is obtained on-site as part of orientation and is not required prior to start,
• Orientation consists of the first week on day shift (Monday-Friday), followed by a second week of 12-hour shifts on the contracted night schedule,
• Scenario-based de-escalation training is held every other week; a dedicated MOAB Educator/Trainer is on site,
• During escalations, a designated 'code leader' verbally de-escalates the patient while assigning roles to other staff; travelers may serve as code leader and are expected to complete a debriefing form afterward,
• Management rounds to code situations to provide additional support,
• Supportive team structure includes a Nurse Manager (days), Nurse Supervisor (evenings/weekends), House Administrator (overnight/weekends), Charge Nurse, Psych Techs, contracted Phlebotomist, NP (on site until 4PM, on call overnight), Psychiatrist (daily rounds, on call 12AM-6AM), and Occupational Therapist (8AM-4:30PM, 7 days/week),
• Security is on site but does not respond to patient escalations; all-staff response from across the facility's 6 units is the standard protocol,
• Travelers may have the opportunity to function in a Charge Nurse role, but it is not required,
• Traditional medical and psychiatric care is provided alongside specialized therapies including pet therapy, group sessions, and community gardens,
• Scrub color: any solid color; professional appearance required,
• Free parking available on site,
• Heavy snow conditions should be anticipated during winter months,
• Up to 7 days of requested time off (RTO) may be approved; the contract may be extended if shifts cannot be covered within a given week,
