American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Progressive Care/Intermediate Care Unit position at a Level II Trauma Center in Bangor, ME, requiring PCU/intermediate care experience and active ME or compact RN licensure.

Requirements
  • Active ME or compact RN license required
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required; AACN or CCRN preferred
  • Minimum 1 year of PCU/intermediate care experience required; candidates with Med/Surg experience only must have at least 2 years of experience with some PCU exposure
  • Must have trauma experience and experience with stroke patients, including performing Q2H neuro checks
  • Cardiac skills required: temporary pacemakers, TR bands, post femoral sheath care, and cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • Cardiac drip experience required, including Amiodarone (set rate) and Cardizem; insulin drip titration experience required
  • Medical/surgical skills required: high-flow O2, chest tubes, wound vacs/VAC dressing changes, BiPAP, drain/ostomy care, IV starts, trach care and suctioning, and experience managing trached patients on vents
  • Must not have ever worked at any Northern Light Health Hospital in a permanent capacity
  • Candidate's permanent address must be 100+ miles south/southwest of the facility to be eligible
  • Two professional references within the past year required, with at least one from a supervisor, manager, or director (charge nurse acceptable; peer references not accepted)
  • Full SSN, copies of all certifications, and a driver's license required for consideration
  • Flu vaccination required for clearance to start (medical exemptions only, subject to facility approval)
Responsibilities
  • Intermediate Care Unit (PCU) at a 411-bed Level II Trauma Center serving as the closest trauma center within a 50-mile radius
  • Diverse patient population including cardiac (STEMI, NSTEMI, CHF, AFib with RVR, post-cardiac cath, post-ablation, 24h post-op TAVR), neuro (strokes, stable craniotomies, CIWA, seizure precautions), and medical/surgical (respiratory illness, long-term trachs with vents, respiratory failure, COPD exacerbation, post-op general surgery, sepsis)
  • Patient ratio of 1:3–4 RN to patients on both days and nights; CNA support at 1:6–12
  • 12-hour night shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
  • Every other weekend rotation required
  • May be placed on low census callback
  • Holiday coverage varies based on unit needs
  • Float requirement to ED, ICU, or CCU when there is an intermediate-level assignment in those departments
  • Charting system is Cerner (highly preferred); uses Alaris IV pumps, Pyxis medication dispensing, and GE monitors
  • Must have completed at least two 13-week travel assignments to be considered; first-time travelers are not eligible
  • Unit support includes CNAs, a charge nurse, phlebotomy, a 24/7 ICU-trained resource nurse, 24/7 RT and hospitalist coverage, trauma surgery, PT/OT Monday–Friday, and an IV/VAT team for US-guided IVs and PICC/midline placement (RNs start their own PIVs)
  • Respiratory therapy will provide education on trach management as needed
  • Orientation consists of general hospital orientation followed by one day on the unit
  • Cerner experience is highly preferred; candidates without it will be sent to the manager for approval
  • All requested time off (RTO) must be submitted at the time of initial consideration
  • Scrubs may be any color but must be professional in appearance

  • Candidates living more than 100 miles north of the facility may be considered on a case-by-case basis
