Description

American Traveler is hiring a Registered Nurse for a Pediatric Psychiatric Unit position requiring at least 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing experience and willingness to float between adult and pediatric units.

Details
  • Freestanding acute inpatient psychiatric facility with a contracted ER 5 minutes away
  • 94-bed facility with 50 pediatric beds and 44 adult beds
  • Pediatric patients range from ages 5-18 years old
  • Common pediatric diagnoses include eating disorders, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, op positional defiant disorder, and gender dysphoria
  • All patients are medically cleared upon admission from the ED, with lines, drains, and tubes not typical
  • Involuntary and voluntary admissions accepted, no forensic patients or inmates
  • Provides traditional medical and psychiatric care plus specialized therapies including pet therapy, group sessions, and community gardens
  • RN patient ratio is 1:5-6 during the day and 1:13 at night with resource support
  • Uses Cerner charting system and Pyxis medication dispensing system
  • Shift schedule is 7A-7P, 12-hour shifts, 48 hours per week
  • Weekend rotation required every other Saturday/Sunday
  • No on-call requirements, though overtime is available
  • Floating required between adult and pediatric units
  • Modified self-scheduling process with predetermined weekend rotation
Requirements
  • Active ME or compact RN license required
  • Current BLS certification required
  • MOAB certification obtained on-site as part of orientation
  • Minimum 1 year of Behavioral Health nursing experience required
  • Pediatric Behavioral Health experience preferred
  • Experience with de-escalation techniques and physical restraints required
  • Comfortable administering medication passes and running therapeutic groups
  • Documentation skills required
  • Flu vaccination required for clearance to start, with medical exemptions only accepted
Additional Information
  • Responsibilities include medical and psychiatric care, medication administration, group facilitation, and documentation
  • Support team includes DON/CNO, Nurse Manager, House Administrator, Charge Nurse, Psych Techs, contracted Phlebotomist, Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatrist, and Occupational Therapist
  • Security staff on-site but do not respond to patient escalations; all clinical staff respond as needed
  • During patient escalations, a code leader assigns roles to staff while managing de-escalation, with debriefing completed afterward
  • Scenario-based de-escalation training offered every other week, with a MOAB Educator/Trainer on-site
  • Travelers may have the opportunity to serve as Charge Nurse, though this is not required
  • Orientation includes first week of day shifts followed by a second week on the contracted shift
  • Holiday coverage required on a rotating basis
  • Scrubs must be any solid, professional color
  • Free parking available on-site
  • Heavy snow conditions expected during winter months
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Radius requirement of 100+ miles south/southwest of the facility for eligibility
  • Candidates must not have previously worked in a permanent capacity at any Northern Light Health hospital
