The postpartum and antepartum areas, as well as GYN and mother-baby care, have a total of 25 beds.
The unit covers a large geographical area and receives many referrals. It is one of the two NICUs in the region and not currently designated as Baby Friendly. Support is provided by on-site lactation staff, CLCs, and IBCLCs in the labor room. Patient ratios are 1:1-3 for cervical ripening, and 1:1 during active labor. For postpartum and antepartum/couplet care, the ratio is a maximum of 3 couplets or antepartum/NICU moms.
The minimum staffing goal for labor delivery is 6 RNs per shift, with a possibility of 5 if there is a call out. The following skills are required: titration of Pitocin, fetal scalp electrode monitoring, and management of insulin and magnesium drips. Neonatal resuscitation and safe skin-to-skin protocols must be supported. Charge experience is preferred and should be addressed during the interview process.
