  • Five years in a management/leadership position, in addition to long-term care experience preferred.
  • Acute/Rehabilitation experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Independent decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel.
  • Knowledge of nursing and medical practices, as well as laws and regulations concerning long-term care.
  • Ability to handle difficult patients/residents.

Description:

Under general supervision, plans, organizes, staffs, directs, and controls nursing services provided within the facility.

Services are delivered efficiently, courteously, and professionally in compliance with standards of care and all federal, state, and local regulations.

The Director of Nursing has the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out assigned duties.

Assumes the role of administrator in their absence.

Duties and Responsibilities:

CLINICAL COMPONENT Develops, interprets, implements, and evaluates standards of care, policies, and procedures for all patient populations.

Assures patient rights by directing and providing care that considers each patient’s value and belief system.

Functions as a patient advocate, providing information and assuring confidentiality of records.

Prepares and directs staff nurses to recognize potential problems, mobilize resources, and take appropriate action.

Directs staff in responding to complex patient care priorities.

Acts as a role model for collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.

Ensures and maintains the competencies of the nursing staff.

Collaborates with other healthcare team members to provide safe care.

Clarifies nursing protocols with physicians and department heads.

Ensures the safe administration of medications according to protocols.

Collaborates on infection control issues and nursing care requirements.

QUALITY IMPROVEMENT Acts as an advocate for safe delivery of patient care.

Participates in committee meetings and in-services.

Maintains a current Registered Nurse License and CPR certification.

Demonstrates setup, operation, and troubleshooting of nursing equipment.

Assures that Universal Precautions procedures are followed.

Maintains a safe therapeutic environment for patients and families.

Monitors the quality of medical records through chart reviews and audits.

Identifies aspects of care for quality improvement monitoring and participates in data collection activities.

Serves on various committees as appointed, including Infection Control and Quality Improvement.

EDUCATIONAL COMPONENT Communicates knowledge to meet the needs of patients and staff.

Acts as a consultant and participates in the development of interdisciplinary education plans.

Identifies staff learning needs and assists in developing educational programs.

Utilizes advanced nursing expertise as a resource consultant for staff.

Provides opportunities for student affiliations and acts as a preceptor as appropriate.

Encourages participation in educational programs that contribute to improvement in nursing practice.

Cultivates a network of contacts within the healthcare community.
