BRIEF

JOB DESCRIPTION:

This position provides hydrogeological assistance in the investigation and remediation of sites where soil, groundwater, and other media have been contaminated. The position assists with planning the appropriate hydrogeologic investigation, oversees and conducts sampling activities, implements a remedial solution as directed to prevent public exposure to contaminants, and provides documentation of contaminated sites. The position collaborates with staff throughout the Department to achieve clean-up goals and assists with other project work as needed.

Responsibilities of the position include:
  • Sampling monitoring wells, drinking water supplies, contaminated soil, and other media.
  • Assisting in the setup and maintenance of remediation systems at contaminated sites.
  • Using GPS equipment to locate site and sample point features in the field, downloading the data, and creating maps using Arc Map.
  • Organizing and entering site data into a variety of Bureau databases.
  • Maintaining equipment operations and storage areas including ordering and organizing field and equipment supplies, determining equipment repair needs and coordinating repair services as appropriate, calibrating instruments, assisting others with proper use of instruments and equipment, and tracking equipment use and sign out.
  • Becoming familiar with and understanding rules, regulations, standards, and guidance used on various types of remedial sites.
  • Oversight of contractors and consultants during remedial activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A five (5) year combination of technical education and/or related experience in geology or closely related field.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following:
  • Knowledge of and interest in basic geology, hydrogeology, earth science, geochemistry, and geomorphology.
  • Knowledge of investigation and remediation methodologies at contaminated sites.
  • Experience in sampling media at contaminated sites.
  • Understanding of Conceptual Site Models.
  • Familiarity with GPS equipment.
  • Familiarity with spreadsheets, databases, and GIS software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to acquire new technical and mechanical skill sets related to maintaining and operating sensitive instrumentation used in scientific data collection, as well as field equipment such as generators, compressors, various types of pumps, hoses, tubing, piping, and tools.
  • Willingness to travel throughout eastern and northern Maine as needed.
  • Desire a combination of field and office-based work.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and engage in self-directed learning as needed.
  • Ability to engage in team-focused approaches during project development and implementation.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision after adequate training has been provided.
  • Ability to become familiar with, interpret, and apply rules and regulations.
