Role Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic professional to join our Environmental Assessment and Advice Team as an Environmental Assessment Officer (Freshwater Fisheries), based in North‑West Wales. In this role you’ll play a vital part in monitoring and assessing freshwater fisheries across the region, providing high‑quality technical advice that helps protect and sustainably manage our natural resources. The post offers a rewarding mix of field and office‑based work, with the main field season running from June to October, allowing you to see the direct impact of your work on rivers and fisheries across Wales.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and assess freshwater fisheries across the region, providing high‑quality technical advice that helps protect and sustainably manage natural resources.
  • Plan and deliver the annual electric fishing monitoring programme, including training new staff, managing kit maintenance, and archiving data.
  • Analyse and interpret data, reporting on findings for statutory purposes such as the Water Framework Directive, the Eels Regulations Directive and other local issues, and produce evidence that informs sustainable management.
  • Provide fisheries information to internal and external stakeholders including local fisheries groups, produce a fisheries newsletter and contribute to Know Your River documents.
  • Travel to remote sites, drive a range of vehicles—including four‑wheel‑drive vehicles—and maintain required equipment.
Qualifications
  • Strong experience in fisheries monitoring and excellent data analysis and report‑writing skills.
  • Comfortable working outdoors and in or around water.
  • Confidence travelling to remote sites and driving a range of vehicles including four‑wheel‑drive vehicles.
  • Full and current UK driving licence is required.
