In this role, the incumbent will operate a variety of trucks and heavy equipment to support core Public Works operations and must be able to use standard hand tools in daily tasks including construction and paving activities. Truck Driver/Heavy Equipment Operator

The Public Works Department delivers essential infrastructure services to the residents of Bangor, including the maintenance of approximately 400 lane miles of streets and 80 miles of sidewalks. Responsibilities include excavation and installation of municipal infrastructure, paving preparations for streets and sidewalks, paving, street signage maintenance, pavement marking, street sweeping, plowing, salting, snow removal, and numerous other operational tasks that support overall City functions.
Candidates must possess, at minimum, a State of Maine Class B driver’s license, with a Class A license preferred. This position requires operating plow, salt, sand, and dump trucks, along with various other types of heavy equipment necessary to accomplish the duties described above.

The salary range for this position is $22.67 to $26.25 per hour. Starting pay will be determined within this range based on the applicant’s experience and verified job‑related competencies. Applicants may demonstrate competencies in operating a skid steer, loader, backhoe, excavator, grader, transit & tenths rod, and in work zone setup at the time of hire. Each competency successfully demonstrated will increase the starting wage within the established range.
Applicants who demonstrate and receive a passing score for 5 of the 7 listed competencies will qualify for a step‑5 starting wage, which is the top of the range listed above.
Employees are eligible for annual merit increases of up to 5%, along with yearly adjustments as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.
Additional hourly stipend pay may be available for the following certifications:
Class A License, Arborist License, Pesticide License, Professional Loggers Certificate, and Welder’s License.
