Mobile Diesel Technician Level II
The Mobile Diesel Technician Level II will perform licensed DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light and follow-up repairs, light mechanical/hydraulic/electrical & electronic diagnostics, and other duties as assigned. The technician will work under the supervision of a Senior Mobile Diesel Technician or higher and will continually develop advanced mechanical and diagnostic skills to meet performance metrics.
Duties- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium and heavy‑duty vehicles in a mobile/field environment.
- Perform minor adjustment and repairs on various truck equipment – electrical, brake, cooling systems, starters, alternators, fan clutches, engine electronics, diesel steering systems, engines (gas & diesel), transmissions (manual & automatic), clutches, and differentials.
- Diagnose, adjust, and repair the same equipment, using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges.
- Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions.
- Road test vehicles to confirm proper operation.
- Identify problems, evaluate information, and generate and evaluate alternatives.
- Manage parts inventory on the company‑issued service truck, performing periodic reconciliation.
- Maintain and operate the service vehicle, conducting safety checks and pre‑/post‑trip inspections.
- Communicate effectively with clients and customers to address needs and provide assistance.
- Prioritize concurrent tasks and allocate time efficiently.
- Use hand tools, precision instruments, diesel tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
- Document work according to company standards, including uploading photos, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders (RO) via the TRAIT application on an iOS device.
- Complete DOT forms and other documentation in a timely manner.
- Work independently and manage the daily schedule with a high degree of autonomy.
- Maintain productivity and adhere to standard repair times.
- Obtain parts from approved vendors as needed.
- Communicate with management and support for repair estimates, purchase order numbers, and RO findings.
- Perform all work in compliance with safety, health and environmental policies, OSHA, EPA and DOT regulations.
- High School Diploma/GED and 3 years of experience in a related field (alternative qualifications may be considered).
- Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary for the job.
- Obtain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification T8 (PMI) within 18 months.
- Pass a DOT‑regulated background screening, DOT physical, and possess a valid DOT medical card with at least 4 months remaining, or provide the card if it expires within 4 months.
- Be at least 21 years old and hold a valid driver’s license; maintain a Driver Qualification File.
- Meet interstate operating authority (COI) and compliance requirements.
- Required (to be obtained within 18 months): ASE T8 (PMI) certification.
- Preferred: ASE T3 (Drivetrain), ASE T4 (Brakes), ASE T5 (Suspension), ASE T6 (Electrical and Electronic Systems), ASE T7 (HVAC), ASE 608/609.
- Apply new information to problem‑solving and decision‑making.
- Lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for long periods; perform moderate heavy labor.
- Maintain endurance for repetitive tasks and avoid fatigue.
- Communicate succinctly and organize information effectively; engage in two‑way communication.
- Select appropriate tools and equipment for tasks.
- Accurately judge distances between objects.
- Use logic and reasoning to assess alternatives.
