Job Summary

Think you've got what it takes to keep Maine's first television station on the air? Join WABI's 10-week paid Engineering Internship and get real, hands‑on experience in broadcast RF, AV, and IT systems with a front‑row seat to full‑time opportunities across Gray Media's 113 stations nationwide.

Training Program

As part of Gray Media's high‑octane, 10‑week paid internship program, you'll work shoulder‑to‑shoulder with our experienced engineering team, keeping Maine's leading news station on the air.

General Responsibilities
  • Step into a real broadcast engineering position and take on hands‑on tasks that directly support live newscasts, studio productions, and post‑production operations that reach thousands of Mainers every single day.
  • Assist with the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of broadcast RF, AV, and IT systems and software from studio audio/video systems and routing to networking infrastructure and transmission equipment.
  • Help ensure all equipment is operating correctly before and during live event broadcasts—learning to identify, correct, and document technical problems with the appropriate sense of urgency.
  • Support IT‑based workflows, digital systems, and streaming platforms across baseband, RF, and IP‑based systems.
  • Learn FCC operational standards and broadcast compliance practices.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance, equipment inspections, and documentation of configuration changes that keep our operation running at peak performance.
  • Position yourself at the front of the line for full‑time engineering opportunities within Gray Media's network of 113 stations across the U.S.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Current enrollment:
College Junior or Senior pursuing a degree in Broadcast Technology, Electronics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
  • "Doer" mindset:
You’re not afraid to roll up your sleeves, pick up a tool, and tackle a technical challenge head‑on.
  • Tech curiosity:
Foundational understanding of professional audio/video equipment, computer networking, and operating systems, plus a hunger to learn more.
  • Strong work ethic:
You bring urgency, organization, a positive attitude, and a "can‑do" spirit to every shift, and you work well with others across departments and disciplines.
  • Reliability:
Ready to commit to the full 10‑week program, the 25‑hour weekly schedule, and the occasional flexible hour that a live, 24/7 broadcast environment demands.
  • Physical readiness:
Ability to perform basic physical tasks, including bending and lifting to 50 lbs; occasional work on ladders or in confined spaces may be required.
  • Passion for local media:
You care about the community and want to see firsthand how local television technology makes a real difference every single day.
  • A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.
Pay and Benefits

The intern rate of pay can range from minimum wage in your state to $15 an hour.
