Job DefinitionUnder general supervision, the dispatcher receives emergency and non‑emergency calls for Police service and dispatches appropriate units to assist the public.

- Undertakes and provides law‑enforcement radio dispatch and information support services assessing caller needs and dispatching appropriate units.
- Answers, identifies and prioritizes emergency and non‑emergency calls.
- Assesses, analyzes, evaluates and processes emergency and routine requests for law enforcement, medical, and related services.
- Tracks location and availability of responders.
- Maintains contact with situations and individuals involved.
- Conducts periodic status checks of officers and others dispatched to calls.
- Accesses local, state, and national databases, researches information, and responds to data requests.
- Updates and maintains files and records.
- Logs calls into electronic and/or manual recording systems.
- Operates a computer to maintain information and data.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Applicable City, County, State and Federal statutes, rules, regulations, ordinances, codes, and administrative orders.
- City and Department policies and procedures.
- Radio operation methods and techniques.
- Principles of file and records management.
- Computer‑aided dispatch systems.
- Reading, interpreting, and applying statutes and regulations.
- Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks and projects.
- Working within deadlines.
- Implementing solutions to complex problems.
- Maintaining effective working relationships with staff, visitors, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED and one year of customer service or secretarial experience. Preferred: emergency services dispatching experience, law‑enforcement agency experience, or completion of a POST Dispatcher training course. Typing qualification of 40 WPM required.
- Valid California Class C Driver’s License. Must be willing to work varying hours, rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Comprehensive background investigation, polygraph exam and psychological evaluation required.
- State of California POST Dispatcher Certificate, obtained within 12 months of hire.
