Job Description

Purpose:

The School Nurse helps students attain an optimum level of physical, social, and emotional health. In order to coordinate a comprehensive student health program, the School Nurse must work closely with the other staff and administration of USD #289.

Responsible to:

Building Principals and the Superintendent of Schools

Qualifications:
  • Current Kansas Board of Nursing License (Registered Nurse).
  • Health certificate on file in central office.
  • Experience as an RN is preferred, but not required.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification required.
  • Desire to continue career improvement.
Essential Functions:
  • Helps students attain an optimum level of physical, social, and emotional health.
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive health program for students, parents, and employees of the district.
  • Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community.
  • Work effectively with community organizations.
  • React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Appropriately operate all equipment as required.
  • Support the value of an education.
  • Support the philosophy and mission of USD #289.
General Responsibilities:
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive health program for students, parents, and employees of the district.
  • Conduct students health appraisals, including:
    • Medical examinations
    • Vision screenings
    • Hearing screenings
    • Weighing and measuring
    • Follow-up of problems noted
    • Consultation with teachers and parents regarding health problems.
  • Coordinate a program of communicable disease control based on Kansas immunization laws, including:
    • Maintaining immunization records for each student.
    • Communicating with parents regarding immunization requirements.
    • Develop and present related inservice to staff members.
  • Coordinate a comprehensive program of caring for students who are injured or who become ill at school.
  • Provide faculty and staff with first-aid training and supplies.
  • Assist in providing emergency care for accidents and sudden illness of pupils until parents assume responsibility.
  • Notify parents and building administrators regarding children who are severely ill or injured.
  • Report school accidents to the State Department of Health.
  • Coordinate and supervise a comprehensive program of dental health education.
  • Encourage parents to provide their children with annual dental check-ups.
  • Request assistance for dentally indigent students.
  • Coordinate and supervise a comprehensive program of health education, including Sex Education, puberty, and AIDS.
  • Encourage periodic health examinations for all children.
  • Confer with parents and community agencies concerning the health of children.
  • Assist in planning the health curriculum and instructional materials.
  • Assist in prevention and control of communicable diseases.
  • Assist in referral and planning programs for exceptional children.
  • Counsel with teachers, students, and parents concerning student’s individual health needs.
  • Maintain a cumulative health folder for each student, recording all data pertinent to the student’s health.
  • Submit accurate and timely reports as required by various health agencies.
  • Immediately report to the principal any safety hazards or unsanitary conditions observed in the school environment.
  • Order and maintain all supplies for the health service program.
  • Assist with enrollment procedures.
  • Ensure that all district policies are observed during all activities.
  • Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
  • Obtain advance approval of the principal for all activities and expenditures.
  • Adhere to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  • Provides CPR and First Aid classes for district personnel.
  • Other duties as assigned by building principal or superintendent.
Physical Requirements /

Environmental Conditions:
  • Requires prolonged sitting and/or standing.
  • Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects.
  • Requires stooping, bending, and reaching.
  • Must work in noisy and crowded environments.
  • Must work in and around fumes and odors.

    Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
Terms of Employment:

185 contract, including all days students are in session and enrollment day. The balance of days are to be fulfilled with work when school is not in session. This would include days between the first and last day of school. Contract days are scheduled in the spring before the coming school year, in conjunction with the building administrators.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Building Principals according to Board Policy and state regulations and yearly by April 30.
