Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma, G.E.D. certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law. Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record. Ability to obtain and maintain any district-required certifications.

Position Summary

Operate district vehicles to safely transport students to and from school and related activities. Maintain appropriate student management, ensure safe loading and unloading, and support transportation operations.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Safely operate district-assigned vehicles to transport students in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and district procedures
  • Follow assigned routes and schedules provided by transportation services
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report any safety or mechanical concerns
  • Assist students on and off the vehicle and ensure safe loading/unloading procedures
  • Maintain appropriate student behavior and enforce district expectations while transporting students
  • Ensure all safety equipment (seat belts, harnesses, etc.) is properly used and secured when applicable
  • Communicate effectively with parents, school staff, and transportation personnel regarding student needs, behavior, and concerns
  • Report accidents, incidents, or injuries immediately to appropriate personnel
  • Complete required documentation, reports, and route information as assigned
  • Attend required trainings, meetings, and in-service sessions
  • Maintain knowledge of emergency procedures and participate in evacuation drills as required
  • Demonstrate punctuality and regular attendance
  • Maintain appropriate professional appearance
  • Adhere to the appropriate code of ethics
  • Assist in a bus monitor capacity when assigned, including supporting students with special needs, operating adaptive equipment, and providing additional supervision
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Superintendent or designee

Knowledge and Abilities

Operation of mechanical lift, wheel chairs, seat belts, restraining harnesses and wheelchair clamping devices. Student management techniques and behavior expectations. Basic understanding of transportation safety practices and procedures. Ability to follow routes, schedules, and written/verbal instructions. Basic record-keeping and reporting procedures. Applicable Kentucky Administrative Regulations and transportation guidelines. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with students of varying needs, including special needs when required.

Basic computer and communication skills.

Physical Demands

Work is performed while standing, sitting and/or walking. Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing. Requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations. Requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching. Requires the ability to lift, carry, push or pull weights in excess of 50 pounds. Requires the ability to enter and exit vehicles safely. Exposure to moving machinery, dust, fumes, gases, and changes in temperature.
