Position Title: Long-Term Substitute School Bus / Fleet Mechanic

Reports To: Vehicle Maintenance Manager/ Lead Mechanic

Position Type: substitute to start ASAP

The Cape Cod Collaborative Transportation Department is seeking a dependable and qualified LTS
Substitute School Bus / Fleet Mechanic to join our maintenance team. This role is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, state inspections, and repairs on our fleet of school buses, vans, and specialty transit vehicles. Your work directly ensures the safety, comfort, and reliable transport of students across our member school districts.

• Fleet Maintenance & Repair:
• Perform routine preventative maintenance (oil/filter changes, fluid flushes, tire rotations, brake adjustments, tune-ups, and lubrication).
• Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic/air brake, suspension, heating/AC, and engine systems on gasoline and diesel vehicles.
• Address defects reported on daily Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR) submitted by drivers in a timely manner.
• Perform minor bodywork, fender/bumper replacements, and interior repairs.
• Safety & Inspection Compliance:
• Inspect and prepare vehicles for Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) school bus safety inspections.
• Ensure all fleet repairs meet Cape Cod Collaborative standards as well as state and federal safety regulations.
• Recordkeeping & Inventory:
• Maintain accurate physical and digital work orders, maintenance logs, and service records.
• Track inventory of tools, parts, and shop supplies; report inventory needs to management.
• Coordinate with the Lead Mechanic on warranty work and manufacturer recalls.
• Operational Support:
• Provide emergency roadside service/breakdown response as needed.
• Assist with seasonal fleet preparation, including winter starting routines and facility snow removal when required.

• Experience: Documented experience repairing and servicing school buses, medium/heavy-duty trucks, or commercial fleets.
• Education: Vocational/technical training in automotive or diesel mechanics is highly preferred.
