Job DescriptionCandidates must be U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, or U.S. Coast Guard officers with a Bachelor’s Degree and hold instructor certification from Naval Science Training Command (NSTC). Applicants without current NSTC certification may apply; however, permanent employment is contingent upon obtaining certification. While military drill experience is beneficial, it is not required.
The SNSI works under a 12-month contract and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the NJROTC program. The SNSI reports administratively to the Superintendent of Schools and operationally to the Principal of Quabbin Regional High School. The SNSI works closely with the Naval Science Instruction (NSI) and determines individual responsibilities. These responsibilities include managing a variety of administrative and logistical functions, preparing reports, maintaining an extensive uniform inventory, and coordinating drill, marksmanship, and other student activities.
Responsibilities/ Duties
- Teaching or co‑teaching the prescribed Naval Science curriculum adjusted to the strengths of the individual.
- Instructing military drill.
- Counseling students in the NJROTC program.
- Writing and updating lesson plans for the NJROTC curriculum as necessary.
- Requisition ing all government‑furnished equipment, including uniforms, training aids, books, drill rifles, air rifles, and organizational equipment.
- Surveying old and worn uniforms and other government property.
- Performing simple preventive maintenance of training aids and devices.
- Inventory control of all government‑furnished equipment/materials, including annual wall‑to‑wall inventory.
- Ensuring proper physical security of all government‑furnished equipment/materials.
- Planning extracurricular activities for the NJROTC unit, such as color/honor guard ceremonies, competitive meets, field trips, Basic Leadership Training (BLT), ship cruises, and other activities decided by the SNSI.
- Preparing periodic reports on program administration and logistics.
- Assessing unit progress to ensure NJROTC program objectives are met.
- Attending Navy‑sponsored training (once per year) to remain current on the requirements of program management.
- Establishing rapport with school administrators, faculty, and community members.
- Making annual presentations of the NJROTC program to 8th‑grade students to recruit new cadets.
- Preparing financial vouchers to the Navy for reimbursement of expenditures supporting the NJROTC program.
- Establishing contact with civic groups to obtain recognition and support of the NJROTC program.
Instructor salaries are determined in accordance with the DoD 7000.14‑R Financial Management Regulation, Volume 10, Chapter 21. Read the regulation.
Additional stipends are available for Drill Team and Marksmanship Coaches.
