Job Description & How to Apply Below

Payroll isn’t just numbers. It’s trust, timing, and teamwork. The Barre Unified Union School District is looking for a Payroll Specialist who thrives in collaboration, pays attention to the details, and believes that great payroll happens at the intersection of accuracy, empathy, and teamwork.

If you love partnering across teams, solving problems before they become problems, and being the calm, reliable presence everyone trusts when it really matters—you’ll fit right in.

What You’ll Do
  • Own end-to-end payroll processing with accuracy, consistency, and care for a district of approximately 600 hourly and salaried employees (bi-weekly)
  • Collaborate closely with HR/Finance Team to ensure seamless data flow
  • Navigate payroll changes (new hires, promotions, terminations, benefits, compliance updates) with confidence
  • Serve as a trusted point of contact for payroll-related questions—clear, patient, and approachable
  • Continuously look for ways to improve processes, increase efficiency, and reduce risk
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies
How You’ll Show Up
  • You’re a team-first collaborator—you communicate openly and value shared success
  • You have a sharp eye for detail but never lose sight of the bigger picture
  • You’re dependable, discreet, and deeply respectful of confidentiality
  • You enjoy building strong cross-functional relationships and earning trust over time
  • You stay cool under pressure and take pride in delivering work that’s right the first time
What You Bring
  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred
  • Proven experience in payroll processing (public or private school experience is a plus)
  • Strong understanding of payroll systems, regulations, and best practices, including 5 or more years of payroll experience
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • A mindset of ownership, curiosity, and continuous improvement
Why This Role Matters

Payroll is one of the most tangible ways employees experience a company’s care and competence. In this role, your work directly supports people’s livelihoods—and you won’t be doing it alone. You’ll be part of a highly collaborative team that values precision, transparency, and mutual support.

  • Pay range is $65,000 - $72,000, commensurate with experience
  • Comprehensive benefits package includes: health & dental insurance, life insurance, long term disability, 5% employer contribution to 403B, vacation time & paid time off
