Job SummaryAssist and supervise special education students—including those on the autism spectrum, with multiple disabilities, and those on Individualized Education Programs—in instruction, behavior, and physical support within the general mainstream classroom. Perform tasks such as adapting classroom materials, conducting assessments, maintaining records, and implementing behavior and instructional programs under the guidance of classroom or special education teachers.
Essential Job Functions- Adapt classroom material and methods to meet student needs in collaboration with teachers.
- Participate in community activities, field trips, and transportation of assigned students.
- Assist with informal assessments to determine student progress.
- Develop, compile, and organize instructional materials.
- Support students with toileting, self‑care, eating, wheelchair transport and transfer, and hearing aid adjustments.
- Maintain files, record grades, and collect and record performance data.
- Perform related office work such as making photocopies, ordering supplies, and processing routine communications.
- Assist with first aid, CPR, and non‑aversive restraint techniques as needed.
- Attend training sessions, meetings, and professional growth activities.
- Assist in team meetings to develop student plans and evaluate progress.
- Supervise students when the teacher is absent.
- High school diploma and at least one year of directly related experience in a school setting.
- Demonstrated experience supporting diverse students, including students of color, English Language Learners, and LGBTQI students.
- Ph.D.? (No, not required. Possibly an associate degree preferred.)
- Valid Vermont driver’s license and reliable transportation (preferred).
- Fingerprint and criminal‑justice clearance (required).
- Strong basic computer skills and experience with word processing;
Microsoft Office familiarity preferred. - Effective communication skills with students, parents, teachers, and staff.
- Ability to perform cognitive and physical tasks required for the role, including lifting and restraining responsibilities as described in the position description.
