Job Description

The Barre Unified Union School District is seeking a Permanent Substitute to support our PreK teaching staff for the 26/27 school year, working with students at Barre Town Middle & Elementary School. Permanent substitutes are full-time school year employees and report to school every day, which differs from a typical substitute position.

Position Goal: To ensure every student is able to pursue their education seamlessly during the absence of a classroom teacher. Our goal is to provide an educational environment where the students are the focus.

Core Primary Responsibilities
  • Receives daily placement from the substitute coordinator.
  • Reviews all plans and schedules to be followed during the teaching day.
  • Maintains established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which assigned.
  • Teaches the lesson outlined and described in the Substitute Plans as prepared by the absent teacher.
  • Assumes responsibility for overseeing student behavior during times when under substitute supervision.
  • Completes reports on the day's activities at the conclusion of each teaching day/period/block.
  • Follows policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject with good teaching practice.
  • Performs other duties as assigned when not assigned to a classroom.
Other Duties
  • Assisting in the classroom, library/learning center, or other instructional setting.
  • Supervising students in areas outside of the classroom.
  • Supervising a study hall, in‑school suspensions, etc.
  • Performing basic clerical duties for the schools’ administrative support staff.
  • Monitoring students in the hallways/lobby and in high‑traffic gathering places.
  • Providing one‑on‑one academic support to students.
  • Substituting in classrooms and covering lunch/work breaks as needed.
Job Requirements
  • Previous experience working with PreK children and early education training/education preferred.
  • Applicants that do not have early childhood education training will be required to take a child development course offered through the local community college within 1 year of hire, as required by the Vermont Child Development Division.
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
