Barrie Fire and Emergency Service (BFES) is a team of dedicated professionals delivering a vast array of emergency services to the citizens, businesses, and visitors to Barrie. Originally organized in 1844, BFES has become one of the most respected fire services in Ontario, providing high-level service in fire inspection/code enforcement, fire protection, technical rescue, training, communications, origin and cause investigations, and emergency management planning.
ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Director of Emergency Services (Fire Chief), the Deputy directs, manages, supervises, and coordinates the activities and operations of the Operations Branch within BFES, including fire suppression, tiered medical, technical rescues, and related services. The Deputy ensures the safety of people, property, and responders in fire and other emergency events. The Deputy coordinates activities with other branches, departments and outside agencies and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Director of Emergency Services.

- Two (2) year post‑secondary college diploma or university degree in fire service administration or a closely related field
- Position Equivalency Code: C (see City’s Education Equivalency Policy for eligibility)
- Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible fire service experience with at least 6 years at officer rank
- Proven management experience, including leadership of others in a unionized environment
- Effective command over firefighting personnel and thorough understanding of the incident management system and chain of command
- Sound knowledge of principles and practices of fire services and requirements of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act
- Superior leadership, organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work with elected and non‑elected officials and staff at all levels
- Computer literacy with the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (required under the Police Record Check Policy; exempt for existing employees who have met criteria)
- Location: Station #1, 155 Dunlop Street West, Barrie, Ontario
- Hours: Normal hours are 35 hours per week; some non‑standard hours may apply
- Wage: Permanent full‑time non‑union position with a 2026 salary of $ per year ($117.22 per hour)
