Aquatic Ecologist will report to the Environmental Department Lead and will have a wide range of duties which ultimately focus on environmental assessment, species at risk, and aquatic studies. You will be part of a team that provides practical ecological solutions to industry, government, and private sectors. This is a new position. The salary range for this position is $50,000 - $78,000.
What You’ll Do:As part of the Environmental team within TULLOCH Engineering, you will:
Design and perform effective aquatic habitat and aquatic biota surveys to meet applicable regulatory or project specific requirementsRecord clear and concise field data under varied conditions including inclement weather and throughout the eveningConduct fish and fish habitat assessments using a variety of gear and sampling techniques in a range of aquatic environmentsConduct assessments of project impacts on Natural Heritage features and prepare mitigation strategies to eliminate or reduce those impactsInterpret field data to prepare quality, accurate, and technically sound reports and regulatory documentsReview technical documents, reports, and other deliverables prepared by colleagues to ensure quality control and to provide technical inputEnsure efficient and effective use of time and resources to adhere to project budgets and schedulesConduct all aspects of business with the utmost respect, honesty, and integrity, including interactions with regulators, clients, and colleaguesSupport various environmental project work as requiredWhat You Should Bring:The ideal candidate will have a university degree (Master’s degree preferred) in Ecology, Biology, or a related program. Additionally, you should bring:
4+ years of experience working in a related role, preferably with consulting experienceProficiency with standard to advanced statistical analytical tools (proficiency with R preferred)Demonstrated ability to perform studies in aquatic ecology (Study design and project management experience is an asset)General knowledge of fish and fish habitatExperience with a range of fish and aquatic sampling techniquesKnowledge of provincial and federal environmental legislationExperience conducting fish community and population assessmentsExperience in field survey design, coordination and field leadHigh motivation with results-oriented focusSuperior organizational and multi-tasking skillsStrong interpersonal and critical thinking skillsExcellent communication skills (oral and written)Unwavering commitment to health and safety in the workplaceProficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)Valid Class G driver’s licenceAssets for this position include: experience supervising and directing junior technical staff; MTO/DFO/MNRF fisheries protocol training; RAQS certification for Fisheries Assessment or Fisheries Contracts Specialty; and/or a ROM fish identification course.Who You Are:You are comfortable working in and around water, in remote areas, in all weather conditions, and at nightYou are willing to travel for fieldworkYou are always keen to try something newYou work hard until the job is doneYou go where others will not or cannot because you love a challengeYou are trusted with the freedom and responsibility to work independently while contributing to overall team successWhat We Offer You:TULLOCH has built a passionate workforce with a strong and vibrant culture which has been the key to our success.
