POWERLINE TECHNICIAN JOURNEYPERSON

Responsibilities- Operate 44kV, 27.6/16kV and 8.32/4.8kV primary systems utilizing bare hand, live line, rubber glove technique, and de‑energized work methods.
- Build, operate and maintain 120/240V and 600/347V secondary systems including sentinel light assets.
- Perform construction of overhead lines; setting and framing of poles, stringing and energizing conductors in accordance with Inn Power standards and Regulation 22/04.
- Perform construction of underground circuits; installation of primary and secondary equipment, ducts, conductors, cables, terminations, splicing and energization of conductors per Inn Power standards and Regulation 22/04.
- Operate underground electrical equipment for cable locating, fault finding and hi‑pot.
- Perform regular stand‑by duty (30‑minute response time) and emergency call‑outs.
- Troubleshoot and analyze line faults and power quality problems using operating maps, service maps and experienced observation.
- Trim trees around energized electrical power lines utilizing chainsaws and other tools.
- Dig and excavate pole holes and splice pits.
- Check, repair, clean and/or replace tools and equipment.
- Operate, maintain and clean line vehicles, boom, bucket and jib.
- Provide guidance for construction crews when in proximity to live conductors.
- Maintain reclosures, voltage regulators and capacitors.
- Install and replace domestic meters.
- Assist line and forestry contractors when required.
- Provide advice to customers regarding their services and energy use.
- Assist in the training of apprentices.
- Assist in contract monitoring.
- Perform other duties within the context of the job.
- Grade 12 high school diploma or equivalent.
- MEA/EUSA/Ministry Apprenticeship Program completion Powerline Technician status.
- Red Seal Certification of Qualification.
- Valid Ontario Class “DZ” driver’s licence (must obtain “AZ” within 5 months of hire) and an excellent driving record.
- Standard First Aid/CPR, WHMIS and Utility Work Protection Code.
- Good hearing, eyesight and hand/eye coordination.
- Ability to safely operate line trade‑related vehicles and equipment and fall arrest.
- Ability to safely work at heights, within confined spaces and in varying outdoor conditions.
- Ability to work safely and effectively with hand tools and carry heavy equipment.
- Good communication (written and verbal), organizational, record‑keeping, interpersonal and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, maps, drawings and procedure manuals.
- Ability to communicate with co‑workers, supervisors and the general public to maintain safe, effective and mutually respectful professional relationships.
- Excellent knowledge of EUSA Safe Work practices.
- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in electrical distribution construction, inspection, operation, testing and maintenance.
