Job Description

The principal goal of this role is to provide a high‑quality science education that encourages students to develop an in‑depth understanding of content and key skills—communication, collaboration, inquiry, problem‑solving, and flexibility—aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards, Rhode Island content standards, and Deep Learning Competencies.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Teach science content and skills following the Next Generation Science Standards, Rhode Island content standards, and Deep Learning Competencies.
  • Select and requisition books and instructional aids appropriate to students’ interests and maturity; maintain required inventory records.
  • Develop standards for critical analysis through group discussions based on a variety of mass media and science topics.
  • Encourage students to think independently.
  • Evaluate each student’s progress on the Disciplinary Core Ideas, Science Practice Standards, Engineering Practices, Cross‑Cutting Concepts, and Performance Expectations.
  • Promote the attainment of the District’s Mission, Vision, and Strategic Plan.
  • Display strong and deep knowledge of the philosophical foundations and content of the curriculum.
  • Apply current research‑based best instructional practices and strategies to deliver the curriculum, and understand how knowledge is constructed within the discipline.
  • Plan and prepare lessons to optimize learning.
  • Promote deep understanding of content by addressing unique learning styles, adapting instruction to meet the needs of all students, engaging students in rigorous learning experiences, using effective questioning techniques, and relating instruction to students’ lives and prior and future learning.
  • Contribute to and implement plans, including but not limited to IEPs, 504s, and individual health plans, for students with unique needs.
  • Reinforce strong student effort and excellent student work products.
  • Facilitate student learning through the use of various collaborative grouping structures that are appropriate to the instructional task, as well as regular and ongoing student reflections, student self‑data tracking, and Plan–Do–Study–Act cycles of inquiry.
  • Require students to regularly engage in high‑level activities, including but not limited to the application and analysis of information.
  • Administer and interpret various types of assessments.
  • Maintain accurate student records as a result of the monitoring of regular formative and summative assessment of curriculum attainment; adjust instruction for individuals and groups of students.
  • Make appropriate referrals and be prepared with credible and accurate documentation.
  • Consider student voice in establishing and enforcing effective and positive classroom rules and procedures designed to ensure safety and enhance learning.
  • Organize all facets of the instructional delivery system so that all equipment and instructional tools are ready for use, and ensure smooth transitions, maximize time on task, and guarantee the efficient distribution of resources.
  • Integrate technology to more effectively deliver the curriculum and specially designed instruction.
  • Actively engage in professional learning community activities and common planning time.
  • Meet all district, school, state, and federal timelines for reporting, communicating and enacting student plans and goals.
  • Communicate high and clear expectations.
  • Assist students in monitoring their own progress.
  • Contribute to collaborative planning activities.
  • Consult and collaborate regularly and professionally with colleagues, students, and parents; communicate immediately with all when there are concerns.
  • Take responsibility for personal professional growth.
  • Participate in school events and in‑school and/or department improvement efforts.
