Job Description

Elementary Classroom Teacher.

Job Goal
  • To create a flexible elementary grade program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth.
  • To establish effective rapport with pupils.
  • To motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for upper elementary grade education, in accordance with each pupil's ability.
  • To create a learning environment that encourages appropriate standards of behavior, positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
  • To foster collaborative relationships with colleagues and families to support students’ learning.
  • To reflect on his/her practice and assume responsibility for his/her own professional development by actively seeking opportunities to learn and grow as a professional.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Teach reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, and science to pupils in a classroom, using the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to each pupil’s needs.
  • Translate lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Evaluate pupils’ academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports.
  • Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupil’s progress.
  • Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Select and requisition books and instructional aids; maintain required inventory records.
  • Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  • Administer group standardized tests in accordance with district testing program.
  • Participate in curriculum development programs as required.
  • Participate in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupil activities.
  • Fulfill any other responsibility as defined in the Teachers’ labor agreement.

  • Rhode Island Teaching Certification.
  • Undergraduate Degree in Education.
  • Maintain Professional Development Credits as required by contract and certification.
Job Requirements
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Bachelor degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
