Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world‑class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century. The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state‑of‑the‑art vessels.

WorkMost of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by gaining hands‑on experience.
What you’ll do at work- Work from planned drawings to install, terminate and test all electrical equipment within a submarine environment.
- Develop competence in the fabrication and fitting of a variety of cable supports, penetrations and installation of electrical equipment using different types of resilience mounts.
- Crimping and termination are important; precision and defect‑free work are essential.
- Opportunity to work on a variety of electrical systems such as lighting, fire detection and communication systems.
- Use a variety of hand tools, specialist components and equipment in nuclear reactors and service electrical testing environments.

Apprenticeships include time away from work for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.
- Obtain, read, analyse and interpret engineering data, drawings or documentation used in the design, build, operation and repair of maritime vessels such as job instructions, circuit diagrams, drawings and quality control documentation.
- Apply health and safety procedures and safe systems of work in compliance with regulations and standards.
- Identify, organise and use resources to complete tasks, considering cost, quality, safety, security and environmental impact.
- Use approved processes and procedures for maritime electrical work.
- Carry out maritime electrical quality assurance checks.
- Resolve maritime electrical engineering problems within the limits of your responsibility; escalates unresolved faults or issues.
- Restore the work area on completion of the activity and return any resources and consumables.
- Measure and mark out maritime electrical components.
- Select and use hand and power tools to cut, shape and finish maritime electrical components.
- Install and remove maritime electrical equipment or components, sub‑assemblies or whole systems.
- Apply maritime electrical assembly methods and techniques such as inspection, termination, connections, fastening, tightening, cleaning, and calibration on maritime vessels.
- Apply testing, inspection and diagnostic techniques used in the maritime electrical environment.
- Apply planned, preventive and corrective maintenance techniques on mechanical, electrical components, equipment and systems.
- Apply continuous improvement techniques and devise suggestions for improvement.
- Communicate verbally with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Apply team working principles.
- Carry out and record planned and unplanned learning and development activities.
- Record and enter information (paper‑based or electronic) such as energy usage, job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents, manufacturers’ documentation, asset management records, work sheets, checklists, waste environmental records, and any legal reporting requirements.
- Apply environmental and sustainability procedures in compliance with regulations and standards, e.g., segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
- Follow equality, diversity and inclusion procedures.
In total, at least 20% of your working hours will be spent on training or study.
RequirementsGCSE in: 5 GCSEs – Maths, English & Science or Technical (grade A*–C or 9–4 or equivalent)
