SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Maintenance Specialist II/III performs a full spectrum of routine and skilled maintenance services, such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, HVAC, grounds, and general trades across campus. This role includes interpreting technical documentation, operating heavy equipment, responding to emergencies (including on-call duties), and maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient campus environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct regular inspections of facilities, equipment, and grounds to identify repair needs, preventive maintenance opportunities, and potential safety improvements.
- Execute maintenance and repairs in diverse trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, HVAC, painting, roofing, signage, and general construction, utilizing appropriate tools and schematics.
- Operate heavy and light heavy equipment (e.g., loaders, forklifts, backhoes, skid steers) as required.
- Interpret and act upon blueprints, schematics, technical diagrams, and work orders.
- Quickly assess and address emergency alarms, system failures, and urgent repair needs; remain available for on-call response.
- Support campus operations by helping with setups, teardowns, furniture moves, event staging, snow/ice removal, and grounds tasks.
- Maintain accurate records, including logs of work performed, materials used, and completed work orders; prepare reports as needed.
- Adhere to all relevant college policies, and federal, state, and local laws, including safety standards (e.g., OSHA, EPA).
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Demonstrated multi-trade maintenance expertise in community or remote/Arctic environments.
- Solid grasp of building codes, construction safety practices, and emergency protocols.
- Experience operating heavy machinery and equipment safely.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication abilities.
- Previous experience training or mentoring others in general construction and safe practices.
- Ability to travel periodically as required.
- Clean driving record: valid driver's license required.
- Capability to pass background checks and work effectively in a multicultural setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of one or more of the following: post-secondary education systems, North Slope Borough institutions and organizations, and Iñupiat culture, language, and values.
- Ability to support Iḷisaġvik College's mission.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 3 years of experience in building maintenance, construction, and skilled trades.
- Associate's degree or vocational training in a related field (e.g., building construction, trades, HVAC)
Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 180 days. - Certifications such as Construction Trades Endorsement, Haz Mat, EPA Universal (for refrigerants), or forklift/heavy equipment operation.
