Fire Engineer

Under the direction of the assigned administrator, the Fire Engineer protects public safety, health, and welfare by responding to fire and emergency medical calls for service by driving fire vehicles and maintaining equipment and facilities.

The following list of functions, duties, and tasks is typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform other closely related or department-specific functions, duties, and tasks from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Drives fire vehicles in responding to fire calls for service, lays hose lines, directs the water streams, and sets up ladders.
  • Performs rescue, clean-up, and salvage work; ventilates buildings.
  • Operates the pumping engine; computes and regulates water pressure.
  • Drives fire vehicles in responding to emergency medical calls for service and follows state and local protocols in the treatment of sick and injured persons, administering first aid, CPR, and other emergency medical procedures.
  • Maintains an inventory of emergency medical supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains fire facilities, equipment, and apparatus ensuring pristine condition.
  • Inspects fire apparatus on a scheduled basis.
  • Performs daily inspections and minor maintenance on equipment and tools.
  • May be called in on 2nd alarm fires when off duty.
  • Assists and cooperates with other public safety agencies.
  • Provides advanced life support to the sick and injured through the practical performance of medical and trauma assessments.
  • Performs structural and wildland firefighting duties.
  • Operates and drives fire apparatus, including pumpers, water tanks, and rescue trucks, to extinguish wildland, structural, and other fires, as well as to perform fire prevention and rescue operations.
  • May act as a Fire Captain relief and assist in the training of new Firefighters.
  • Performs paramedic duties.
  • Checks, cleans, and polishes fire engine trucks.
  • Performs general station maintenance and repair work.

Other duties:
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:
Federal, state, and local laws and radio communications procedures City's geography, water systems, location of hydrants, and those of the surrounding area Public safety agencies related to fire and emergency medical service functions Basic hydraulics Design, operation, and maintenance of fire engines, pumps, and pumping components Fire prevention and inspection methods, fire hazards, and educational fire prevention techniques, and programs Building construction, mathematical equations on fire grounds, and fire behavior Department policies and procedures Advanced life support medications and interventions Human anatomy and physiology Operating large apparatus and its mechanics

Skills and abilities

to:
Read and understand technical material, rules, and regulations related to firefighting, rescue techniques, and emergency medical incidents. Analyze emergency situations and address them with an effective course of action. Tactfully interact with members of the public. Safely operate and use fire vehicles and equipment. Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing Operate modern office equipment including a computer and applicable software;
