The BNSF Police department is dedicated to ensuring the security and safety of the company's vast network of rail operations. This department employs comprehensive strategies and state-of-the-art technology to safeguard the transportation of goods, prevent theft, and mitigate risks associated with railway operations. By collaborating closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, the BNSF Police team plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity and reliability of BNSF Railway's services.

Members of the Police team are experienced professionals with diverse skillsets and are fully sworn, POST-certified police officers, who have been granted federal interstate authority.

This is a full‑time position located in Barstow, California.

Travel is required and is extensive.

Training for this position is at both corporate headquarters in Fort Worth, TX and on‑site at location with an internal trainer.

Relocation package may be provided for eligible candidate(s).

Role Description

Our Special Agent in Charge positions for the Special Response Team (SRT) are critical to the successful stand‑up and execution of our SRT mission, which is focused on high‑risk response, critical infrastructure protection, and system‑wide crime reduction. They provide strategic and operational leadership for the BNSF Police SRT, ensuring the safe, effective, and compliant execution of high‑risk rail security operations. Direct, coordinate, and support SRT Special Agents in the planning, deployment, and completion of special operations to protect BNSF personnel, assets, and critical infrastructure.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Lead, supervise, and evaluate SRT Special Agents, ensuring operational readiness, training compliance, and adherence to BNSF Police standards.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute high‑risk special operations including rail‑specific counter‑trespass initiatives, critical infrastructure protection, warrant service, dignitary/asset protection, and emergency response.
  • Manage daily schedules, assignments, deployment rosters, and field operations while maintaining real‑time situational awareness of SRT activities across the network
  • Serve as on‑scene or tactical commander during SRT deployments, coordinating with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and departmental policies, including use‑of‑force standards, evidence handling, and operational documentation.
  • Oversee procurement, maintenance, and accountability of specialized tactical equipment, vehicles, and protective gear.
  • Develop operational plans, threat assessments, and after‑action reports to support continuous improvement and risk mitigation.
  • Provide subject‑matter expertise on rail‑specific tactical operations, critical infrastructure vulnerabilities, and emergency response protocols.
  • Participation in national‑level rail security exercises and joint operations.

Daily work is conducted in a safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions, walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.
