Definition
Under direct supervision, the Public Services Assistant (PSA) II performs a variety of facility maintenance and repair activities, landscape, street maintenance, field services, and utilizes a variety of tools and requires the operation of both light and heavy equipment and various motorized vehicles.
Essential Functions, Duties, and TasksWorking within the Facility Maintenance team, the selected individual may be responsible for duties which include:
- Assist in the repair, maintenance and landscaping of city-owned facilities and parks.
- Clean and maintain facilities and buildings.
- Paint facilities, buildings, equipment, curbs and related structures.
- Assist in the replacement of concrete and asphalt.
- Assist in the maintenance and preparation of sports fields for use, including batting cages and buildings.
- Assist in the maintenance of street markings such as crosswalks, striping, pavement markers, signals and signs.
- Assist in the maintenance of storm drains, storm channels and bridges.
- Perform weed and graffiti abatement.
- Assist with set up and tear down of special events.
- Perform related duties, as assigned.
The successful candidate should have a working knowledge of the methods and techniques used in a complex maintenance operations, be able to operate a variety of tools/equipment, and be able to work in extreme weather conditions.
Knowledge, Abilities and SkillsKnowledge of:
- Methods, techniques and equipment used in facilities, parks, landscaping, and street maintenance and repair and construction.
- Basic carpentry, electrical, painting and plumbing trades.
- Standard safety practices required in facilities, parks, landscaping, and street maintenance and repair.
- Supplies and equipment used in cleaning and maintaining buildings or facilities.
Ability and Skill to:
- Operate a variety of tools, equipment and vehicles including but not limited to a motor grader, wheel loader, dump truck, striper, ladder truck, street sweeper, paint truck, tree chipper, forklift, stump grinder, tractor, welder, chain saw and carpenter saws.
- Operate office equipment including computers, copying machines and phone systems.
- Read, interpret and apply technical information from manuals, drawings, specifications, layouts, blueprints and schematics.
- Perform cement and masonry work and make signs.
- Respond to questions from the public and staff.
- Plan and organize work to meet schedules and timelines.
- Communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
- Perform duties of an emergency worker in the event of a natural or other disaster.
- Ability to lift 90 lbs.
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, abilities and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the qualifications would be:
- Completion of 12th grade and some general maintenance experience.
- Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License and a good driving record.
- Class B license with tanker and air brakes endorsement required.
- Two (2) years of experience as a Public Services Assistant I or equivalent.
- Specialized training in construction technology or related field is desirable.
