Recreation Activity Coordinator
The city is seeking a motivated, creative, and service oriented employee to serve as our Recreation Activity Coordinator. This internal promotional opportunity is ideal for someone who is passionate about building community through engaging recreation programs, special events, and exceptional customer service. Under the direction of the assigned administrator, the Recreation Activity Coordinator plans, coordinates, and implements comprehensive recreation, leisure, community social and cultural programs, services, and special events for children, youth, seniors, and their families.
The following list of functions, duties, and tasks is typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform other closely related or department-specific functions, duties, and tasks from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Develops programs, prepares, and maintains a recreation environment, including bulletin boards and interest centers.
- Provides and oversees individualized and group assistance to clients in educational programs, arts and crafts, recreational activities, and special events.
- Provides and oversees assistance to clients, ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect.
- Coordinates and provides direction to staff and volunteers.
- Assists in the development of goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
- Researches, develops, evaluates, and modifies programs to meet participants' needs and abilities.
- Researches, plans, schedules, and coordinates day and overnight trips and tours, as well as seasonal and year-round activities.
- Serves as a liaison to community groups, law enforcement, schools, and public and private agencies.
- Develops written materials, including but not limited to program flyers, brochures, event schedules, and newsletters; coordinates social media information and promotions.
- Coordinates facility rentals.
- Assists in budget preparation and monitoring.
- Maintains records and files and develops routine reports.
- Responds to inquiries about operations, programs, and events and resolves complaints and/or concerns.
- Manages inventory and develops a replacement list of supplies and equipment; orders and purchases supplies and equipment.
- Plans and implements special events for children, youth, seniors, and their families.
Other duties may include:
- May supervise full time and part time staff.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials, equipment, and strategies used in early childhood, youth and senior citizen development, and education
- Development milestones and needs of pre-school-aged children, youth, and seniors
- Techniques used in budget preparation and monitoring
- Principles of supervision
- Methods for effective public engagement and customer service
Skills and abilities
to:
- Patiently work with children, youth, and seniors individually and in groups
- Respond to questions from the public and staff
- Develop activities to engage pre-school-aged children, youth, and seniors
- Remain current on trends and innovations in child development, early childhood, youth and senior education, programs, and activities
- Write brochures, newsletters, press releases, and other written materials
- Prepare and monitor the program budget
- Train and supervise assigned staff
- Plan and implement special events for children, youth, seniors, and their families
- Plan and organize work to meet schedules and timelines
- Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing
- Perform the duties of an emergency worker in the event of a natural or other disaster
- Understand and respond to the public's and staff's requests for assistance both on the phone and in person
- Participate in children's educational, arts and crafts, and playground activities
- Operate modern office equipment, including a computer and assigned software
- Travel between locations for business purposes
- Relate well, communicate, and work effectively with diverse groups of stakeholders who represent a range of ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds
