Summary

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, trouble shooting, training and making workflow recommendations.

Position Responsibilities
  • Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc.
  • Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures.
  • Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and or other specimen collection (ex. urine or fecal) as required; demonstrates technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles and fully understands all physicians' orders.
  • Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens as required by test orders.
  • Checks all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% correctness.
  • Packages specimens for transport and stores specimen samples according to required temperature, placing samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately labeling, and following different procedures as outlined by specific protocols necessary for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Understands and complies with OSHA and DEP regulations, attends annual department trainings, answers telephone calls, and reads laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed as required in some states.
  • Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast‑paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience.
  • Requires pediatric to geriatric experience.
